vacuum leak.
You can start troubleshooting by finding the thin plastic tube that goes from the engine firewall into the inside of the car. Disconnect that on the engine side and plug it on the engine side with a golf t and tape. If this shuts the engine down with the key, there is a leak in one of your tubes inside of the car (door locks and trunk lock are all vacuum operated).

sounds like wrong temperature range thermostat , or new defect , i only use stant thermostat , also double check coolant level , almost always air traps after coolant service

if it wont close, it could be the striker on the door jamb, should have 2 star bolts that take a star bit, you can loosen them , line them up with the door latch and re-tighten.

check for any coolant leaks, running low will cause an air pocket, you did not specify mileage on vehicle, but if any chance your thermostat, upper and lower radiator hoses may also be colapsing. good luck.

Hi thanks for asking. The thermostat is doing its job because it is supposed to open at 80c or 176f. If you are not in an extremely cold climate where the engine simply cannot maintain enough heat, then there is most likely going to be a low coolant situation or even a clogged heater core. If the temperature fluctuate wildly, though.. then you should look into the water pump drive system.

Glow plug fuse under hood of car, driver side close to head light . There is a cover pull off and see the blown fuse.

Hi carradk,

I just happend to have a similar problem with my 84 300td. I thought that I needed the solenoid as well, however, one of the vacuum hoses was torn. The solenoid can be found next to the injection unit and has several rods connected to it. It also has 2 vacuum hoses connected to the solenoid. I am not sure if your 85 is the same , but I believe it is. If you have the 2 hoses, check for vacuum at the hoses. The hoses run inside the car to the ignition switch as well. You can verify your solenoid is good or bad by applying vacuum using a vacuum pump to the solenoid. If the solenoid is ok the engine should cut off, if not I would suspect it faulty. Double check and make sure the linkage is lubricated, sometimes it dries out and can stick. The solenoid should also have a part number on the side. It is also referred to as a vacuum control shut-off valve.
