Every gas tank has a vent tube, so when you fill the tank, air can escape, while the fuel is being pumped into the tank. Some vent tubes are metal, some rubber. Yours is either collapsed or plugged up. Look at the fill tube in the firebird and follow it from the gas cap to the tank, there should be a 2nd smaller tube that is your vent tube. Check to see if it's collapsed, pinched, or bent. This is definitely your problem. Check out this web site for pictures of different fill and vent tubes to get an idea of what to look for. I would check the ground for the PCM, make sure it is clean and making good contact. Also check the wiring harness and ensure no wires have been pinched or cut, that could cause a short or low voltage situation. Otherwise that code does indicate an internal problem with the PCM

If engine is facing forward cylinder 1 is located on the right side when you look at engine. Open hood and look at engine standing in front of vehicle the number 1 cylinder will be on your right

Vent tube looks good.? Check for any kinks, also may be plunged. If you already have not done this sorry... it's where i'd start. May sound like a goofy question but is the vehicle level?

Well CB....a knocking noise coming from the engine is never good news.

Typically any real ugly noise that stops an engine from running is catastrophic. With the info you provided...low oil pressure, excess oil in the pan, knocking engine sounds and a motor that will now, not turn over...sounds like a bent con rod caused by a failed main bearing.

The engine overheated so the first suspect is the cooling system, some engine designs require that the thermostat be installed with the vent or bypass hole in a certain position. Failure to position the thermostat properly can cause engine overheating.

Another cause of the dreaded knock is "Knocking and pinging" caused by a low fuel octane rating, carbon deposits on cylinder walls or incorrect spark plugs... all not good. I think you would have noticed if your motor was knocking and pinging for any extended period of time.

Excess oil in the pan gets frothed up by the crankshaft slapping it around and aerates the oil which decreases its shear strength, which is what keeps metal parts from contacting directly together.
This could ruin the main crankshaft bearings.

First thing I would do is remove all the spark plugs (to reduce engine compression) and place a socket on the crank pulley bolt and try to turn the engine over...you should be able to spin the crank....if you can't get the motor spinning..it's seized up.

Well it could be any number of things.

A quick way I use to find out if it's ignition (spark) of a fuel problem is to remove a hose from the intake and shoot some starting fluid into the intake. Then try to start the engine. If it starts and runs for a couple of seconds then it's a fuel problem. If it don't, then it's probably an ignition problem.

If you suspect an ignition (spark) problem then you can confirm by using a tester like this;
KD Tools Ignition Tester Calibrated for Standard Ignitions KDT2757 Advance...

Make SURE you get one for HEI ignition, not standard ignition like the one linked. i simply posted it to give you an idea as to what it looks like.

IF the 'check engine or service engine soon' light has been on you could try to scan for codes to see if there is any showing up. Try to scan for 'pending codes' also as that may give an indication as to which way to turn.

If there are any trouble codes DON'T simply buy the part without checking the live data if possible. Rather hard to do without the engine running though, but if you do get it running CHECK the live data.

Firing the 'parts cannon' at a vehicle can get pretty pricey, especially if it don't fix the problem.

Check the linkage first. They put plastic grommets on the arms. They disintegrate. After that, it is internal. They also put plastic tabs on the shift forks. Could be a bad gear.

1,3,5 are on the Drivers side. 1 closest to the radiator. GM has always laid them out this way.

the pump may not have been fitted properly allowing oil to pass between the body and the block
the oil pick up tube may be leaking allowing air to be sucked up and not oil
fitting new gears in an oil pump is not a good idea as it is the clearance between the apex of the gear and the body that controls pressure and not gear condition
you mention .010" r and M
was the crank ground .010" under size and were the correct bearings fitted for the grind as that will also affect oil pressure
oil pumps have a built in pressure relief valve and on cleaning that is removed and may not have been fitted correctly
