My car does not shift in second gear.


The first thing to do is replacing the transmission fluid. Metal debris inside the transmission box gets mixed with fluid and can cause similar problems.

The automatic transmission uses throttle position sensor to determine position and opening of throttle.
IF throttle position sensor is defective, the car may have problems shifting into one or more gears.

The automatic transmission is controlled by an electronic control module, that is energizing a set of solenoids to shift into gears.
The control module is a rectangular box, often located behind the dash and wired to transmission. The solenoids are attached to valve body,inside transmission.

If a solenoid is defective, or if control module is defective, the car may have problems shifting into one or more gears.

Problems concerning transmission control module, TPS and transmission solenoid are usually detectable reading fault codes stored on the car main control module (ECU/ECM).

Transmission problems are often returning a code p0700 after an OBDII scan.

Stored codes can be retrieved using an OBD scan reader.
If the car auto transmission is not shifting into gear, talk to the mechanic about the problem.
Only when the car has a really high mileage, or when there is a factory problem there is need to replace the gearbox.
A damaged gear box at low mileage is rather unusual.

When the a transmission solenoid is stuck on, in most cases the problem is not the electrical part of the solenoid; the problem is foreign material obstructing the mechanical function of the solenoid or the flow of the fluid through the transmission valve body. If the transmission fluid is very dirty, it is recommend changing the transmission fluid and if possible removing the transmission pan for further diagnosis. Excessive debris or metal particles on the transmission pan could be an indication that there is a transmission mechanical failure and that the transmission will need to be rebuilt or replaced

I am afraid your mechanic very well could be correct. If the transmission was run low on fluid to the piont that the clutches were slipping, there could be some severe damage inside the transmission that may require an overhaul.

I think if it was my vehicle, I would pull the pan off and check to see how much debris is in the bottom of the pan. If you see a bunch of metal flakes, then it is transmission rebuild time. If there is only a bunch of the normal (black) clutch material, I would try replacing the filter and refilling it with fresh transmission fluid and see if the shifting improves.

2002 neon. how could transmission fluid be getting ino radiator?

On one of the tanks on the radiator you have two hosed that come from your transmission. This tank is your transmission cooler. Inside the plastic on the radiator you have a metal tube through which your transmission fluid pases through. That tube is surrounded by coolant/antifreeze which is used to cool your transmission fluid. A rupture in the tube would case fluids to mix possibly causing damage to the transmission.

The radiador and transmission fluids are mixed and the van overheated. Why?

The transmission is cooled by the radiator. The transmission cooling lines go into the radiator where Inside the radiator these is a heat exchanger that has sprung a leak. This is where your fluids are mixing. Your radiator is loosing coolant into the transmission ( not a good thing ) . Your transmission fluid is now contaminated and may fail soon unless the problem is fixed quickly,however the damage has already been done. At the very least you will have to replace the radiator, flush the cooling system and flush the transmission and install a new transmission filter.

hi, i have automatic passat 1999 model and recently water happens to get into the gear box and it control board, i experiences a boom sound anytime the gear is changed, the oil has been changed by the problem still exist. pls give me an advice ?

If no external leak and the transmission fluid colour looks white, the problem belongs to the automatic gearbox oil cooler. The oil cooler has broke mixing the gearbox oil and coolant causing this milkshake. It's a small radiator core type oil / water heat exchanger. It is cracked inside and transmission oil is mixed with engine coolant. Because the transmission oil pressure is greater than engine coolant pressure, the transmission fluid level drops.
