Question about 1992 Mitsubishi Pajero

1 Answer

Chuffing sound when accelerating, not at idle

In cold or cool weather, this chuffing sound is very prominant, and almost can be compared to a choo choo train...chuffing goes with the speed of the truck, goes faster, the faster I accelerate. The sound slowly dissappears as the pajero warms up, approx, an hour, depending on how cold it is outside. In 20 degree celcius weather, you can't hear it at all. It has just baffled me as to what this is, and if it's serious or not.

Not firing on number 4 cylinder

Hi,you probably have a compression or injector issue. If it will reach swap the injector wire(2 pin clip)to the next cylinder and see if it starts to miss or even swap the whole injector with one of the front ones to see if the miss follows the injector. If no4 continues to miss grab a compession guage and do a test.It should have a minimum of 140psi at cranking speed.A burnt valve is often the culprit, the clue is popping at the exhaust at idle is an exhaust valve, puffing or chuffing in the intake is an intake valve. This is a head off job,and you should do a full valve service guides etc while off. Also on re assembly check all vacuum pipes and fittings as leaks kill valves. Also if it has just started doing this it may be a vacuum leak near no4.Sometimes the brake booster or hose,it needs to be fixed soon as valves are burnt quickly

CHECK THE COLD START ENRICHMENT VALVE AND OR THE IDLE CONTROL VALVE. I AM ASSUMING THAT YOUR VEHICLE IS FUEL INJECTED. ONE OF THOSE HAVE GONE BAD.

Engine will not idle and run when starting in cold weather

Have a mechanic take a look at your throttle position sensor and engine idle sensor. Make him manually adjust them as opposed to just putting in new ones. It may require that you have to have a higher idle than normal. Your underlying cause is going to be that I am sure you have a lot of miles on your engine.
