If the transmission is slipping and I assume that is what you mean then it is going to need an overhaul. Once an auto transmission slips it is done.

Wouldn't it be premature for the transmission of an 2005 S60 volvo to start to fail? I have 158,000 miles on it and am really hoping it isn't the trainy. IT feels like the transmission is slipping,...

if the engine rpm dont keep pace with you accelerating then your trany is slipping. 158k is alot of miles, not that its there limit but its not unheard of

Ford Focus 2005 LX TDI 1.8 Estate - gratting/knocking/clunking noise from clutch (?) when accelerating, when engaging clutch at standstill, gonna take a look tomorrow - any ideas what to look for?

Most clutch problems are related to disengagement meaning when you have the pedal depressed. That typical noise is then made by the throwout bearing.
I'm not sure you have identified the source yet since accelerating doesn't have much to do with a clutch that is engaged. A worn clutch reveals itself by slipping; the motor runs faster than it should for the speed of the car and no longer synchronized with with the acceleration.
