Question about 2007 Jeep Compass 2.4
Rear end noise, left side bearing seems loose while right side seems tighter
Block front wheels and jack up rear slightly off the ground, keeping your body parts out of harms way you can grab and shake tires, if they move back and forth or in and out even slightly it is time for bearing work

Since you aready paid $400, go back to ;the shop and get your $'S worth!! Unless someone can prove that the axle bgs were bad, you shoulld ask why pinion & side gears were not diagonsed!!! (dosen't anyone test drive stuff after they "fix" something anymore??? Dosen't anyone give a damn???
If you can't get anywhere with this, find a junkyard unit and install it yourself. It isn't that hard. Just be sure that new lone has the same mount points and gear ratio matches ratio lof front axle.(count gear teeth if you must)

Been at this for thirty years...never saw an oiling port on any differential! My honest opinion is .....baloney!!! Either the unit was installed incorrectly was a poor quality part to begin with or is defective. The part you need to replace is a sealed bearing hub assembly (including wheel flange) It's not difficult to install and the best part available from NAPA is about $160. (sealed bearings have no external source of lube, and are usually filled with a high quality silicone /synthetic lube at the factory)
This is what I fought against every day I was in business...it gives all techs a bad name and lowers the integrity of the industry.
Hope you have better success with it but really consider another shop!!!

You also could have received a bad axle. Sometimes the rebuilds don't hold good tolerance and can make the same noise you are trying to get rid of. Is it full-time 4wd? Maybe the driveshaft ujoint also.

better check a manual, The ones I have done do not have c-clips in the diff. You remove 4 nuts behind the brake backing plate, then use a slide hammer to pull out the axle shafts. Then the bearing retainer must be removed (cut or drill into it, the crack it with a hammer blow from a chisel), it should slide off the axle. Then use a bearing splitter and a press to remove the bearing. To install use a long pipe and press to install the new bearing and retainer. Change the seal while your in there. Hope this helps.
