Third brake light flashing when engine is off, no main brake lights

I have a 1998 Ford Explorer XLT. The third brake light above the tailgate is flashing. When pressing the brake pedal, the third light goes on fully, but the two main brake lights don't come on. I tried looking at the fuses, but can't tell which one is for the brake lights. Ideas?

This does not sound like a fuse problem. seems like a wiring issue. You probably have wires shorted together, and/or shorts to ground somewhere.

Brake switch is a good place to start, make sure it's working fine. To find the wiring issue you will need electrical diagrams, so get yourself a repair manual for a 1998 Explorer.

Look at connectors, see if you can find components or connections where all the brake light and tail lights connect to together. Using a multi meter you should be able to pin point the issue if u follow the wiring from the battery to the lights using the diagrams and checking connectors.

La falla ocurre porque los dos (2) bombillos de la luz de freno (de doble contacto) están quemados, reemplacelos y solucionará el problema. Utilice bombillos de primera calidad, nunca use los baratos ya que no duran nada.

Bar brake light above back door will not go out

If the brake light switch above the pedal was sticking, then all three brake lights would be staying on.
If it is only the axillary third brake light, than that is a bit unusual.
I am trying to image things like current being wired to the lights first and grounding at the switch. Then if the wire from the 3rd light was squashed and shorting, it would then only effect the one light.
But this is unlikely.
I would suggest removing the wires from the brake light switch, to see if it goes out then.

Main brake lights dont work The third light over window does

You have a ground problem somewhere, do you have a towing light set up on the rear of the vehicle? Check all your ground wires. Also remove the center piece from around the steering column and see if any of the wires from the turn signal switch have come lose or pulled out. The turn signal switch has wiring that goes to the brake light switch. You may have to replace the switch because it may have a internal problem which is a commen problem. They actually call it a multi function switch and you can purchase at most parts stores. There is small holes in the bottom half of the cover that you will need to remove to get the cover off. Usually phillips or torx screws.. they sell torx screw drivers just ask for the 2 most common sizes.Hope this helps leave comment getting tired of answering and not getting results.

OD off Light Flashing on my 1998 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 V

The OD light is flashing to alert u to the fact that some kind of fault has occured in the transmission, the problem is in many cases a slipping condition, you need to have the trans control system tested for the trouble codes that are stored when this light flashes, this will let u know what the problem is and a direction to follow to repair it.
