Hi, I replaced the thermostat bypass hose, refilled with coolant ran engine to bleed system and coolant is gushing out of radiator fill hole. I have not come across this before any help please.

    So you have alot of air in the system which needs to be burped. I squeeze the hoses teying to pull the air in and out. I use the palm of my hand over the fill hole and just keep grabbing the hoses to squeeze in a way to force air out. You may even have a bleeder on a hose connection that may bleed air out also. Not all cars have them. I had a ford windstar and found it was easier to remove the engine hose and pour the fluid into the engine to make it faster then filling through the fill next. Not saying you need to do that. Sometimes there are better options or tricks to make a simple job less a pain.

When running the engine to bleed air was the cap on the rad fill hole? It should be so the coolant system builds up the required pressure, may have to repeat this process a couple of times, after engine has cooled,the expansion bottle is the better place to refill the coolant

You may need to ask AAA to put a radiator pressure tester on the resevoir bottle and pump it up to operating pressure(Pressure cap rating) and see if it over pressurises while it is running at operating temp,rev engine up and down and watch what the testers pressure readings do,it should move up and down in sync with the water pump.If the pressure keeps building i would have to believe that combustion chamber gases are over pressurising your cooling system.Also test the pressure cap is functioning within factory specs.

Perform a liquid block test (with the bottle of fluid over the radiator mouth.) If the blue liquid turns yellow or clear, you have hydrocarbons entering the cooling system (usually via head gskt.) If not, you have ruled out a costly repair.

Sounds like it overheats pretty easily, without t-stat! This block testing liquid is cheap, and will verify a suspected leaking head gasket without lengthy diagnosis. Hope it's better news, but good luck!

In my experience with Audis, after any job requiring changing/draining the coolant the car ideally needs to be driven. With the coolant topped up to max drive the car, keep the revs up and shake the car with steering and over bumps where possible. Whatever you do make sure you take at least 2 litres of water/coolant with you, as as soon as the air lock goes, the level drops a lot and quickly. Also keep an eye on the temp gauge and avoid letting it go much over 90 degrees (over 90 on the gauge usually means its well into the hundreds) When you get consistant hot air through the heater, at idle, the level should of settled. If this doesnt work you may have thermostat issues or a blockage. Good luck, let me know how you get on.

Where is the thermstat at in a 1998 ford taurus?


I'm guessing you can't find it because it's in a separate housing or located under the lower battery tray in the housing (depending on model of engine). Even though this is specific for 1998; I believe it's the same for 1996-1999 Taurus's. I have access to illustrations, but only .gif and/or .bmp extensions were available which would not copy here. If you need these, I will try an extension change to .jpg. Good luck, this should be enough info. It is helpful to include the engine size in question, for future reference...

Removal

Drain the engine cooling system so that the engine coolant level is below the water thermostat (8575) as described.
2.Disconnect the upper radiator hose (8260) from the water hose connection (8592) .
3.Remove the three water inlet connection retaining bolts. Remove the water hose connection .
4.Remove the gasket and water thermostat from the water hose connection . Do not reuse gasket.
Installation
1.Install the water thermostat , gasket and water hose connection as illustrated.
2.Install and alternately tighten the retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 10-14 Nm (89-124 lb-in).
3.Connect the upper radiator hose to the water hose connection .
4.Fill the engine cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of Premium Engine Coolant E2FZ-19549-AA (green), (in Oregon, F5FZ-19549-CC, in Canada, Motorcraft CXC-10), or Ford Extended Life Engine Coolant F6AZ-19544-AA (orange), or DEX-COOL coolant, or a coolant meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44-D and water, as described under Cooling System, Draining, Filling and Bleeding procedure.
5.Start the engine and check all hoses and connections for leaks. Allow the engine to warm up so that the water thermostat opens.
6.Stop the engine. Top off degas bottle as required to maintain minimum cold fill level.

Removal

Drain the engine cooling system so that the engine coolant level is below the water thermostat ; refer to Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section.
2.Raise vehicle on hoist.
3.Disconnect the lower radiator hose (8286) from the water inlet connection.
4.Remove the two water inlet connection retaining bolts. Remove the water inlet connection.
5.Remove the O-ring seal and water thermostat from the water thermostat housing. Inspect O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.
6.If required, remove water thermostat housing retaining bolts, water thermostat housing and O-ring from lower radiator hose tube. Inspect O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.

Installation
1.Install the water thermostat , O-ring, water thermostat housing (if removed) as shown.
2.Install and alternately tighten the retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb-in).
3.Connect the lower radiator hose to the water inlet connection.
4.Lower vehicle.
5.Fill the engine cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of Premium Engine Coolant E2FZ-19549-AA (green), (in Oregon, F5FZ-19549-CC, in Canada, Motorcraft CXC-10), or Ford Extended Life Engine Coolant F6AZ-19544-AA (orange), or DEX-COOL coolant, or a coolant meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44-D and water; refer to Cooling System, Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section.

5.Disconnect upper radiator hose and position out of the way.
6.Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water inlet connection (8K528) .
7.Remove the two retaining bolts. Remove the water inlet connection .
8.Remove the O-ring seal and water thermostat from the water pump (8501) . Inspect O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.

Thermostat

Installation
1.Install the water thermostat , O-rings and water inlet connection as illustrated.
2.Install and alternately tighten the retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb-in).
3.Connect the lower radiator hose to the water inlet connection .
4.Install upper radiator hose . Position spring clamp securely.
5.Install battery tray.
6.Install power distribution box.
7.Install battery.
8.Fill the engine cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of Premium Engine Coolant E2FZ-19549-AA (green), (in Oregon, F5FZ-19549-CC, in Canada, Motorcraft CXC-10), or Ford Extended Life Engine Coolant F6AZ-19544-AA (orange), or DEX-COOL coolant, or a coolant meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44-D and water; refer to Cooling System, Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section.

The thermostat is located on the side of the water pump, the water pump is located just above the a/c compressor, the thermostat is fed coolant from the radiators lower radiator hose.
Thermostat :
1. drain coolant and tighten drain plug ( easier method : remove radiator cap, get big drain pan, place drain pan under lower radiator hose to radiator connection, remove clamp, slowly remove hose, allow coolant to drain into pan, now is a good time to remove radiator hose and clamp from thermostat housing )
2. remove thermostat cover / cap ( easiest to get at this when front of car is supported by jack stands and right hand side lower cover is removed ).
3. thermostat cap is held on by 3 bolts / remove thermostat.

You will notice that the thermostat's air bleed hole is pointing up and lines up with notch in water pump housing,,

ATTENTION :failure to install new thermostat in the correct location will cause engine to overheat.

1. install new thermostat to water pump, make sure air bleed hole lines up with notch, install and tighten bolts, install a new lower radiator hose, fill cooling system.

Engine overheating i have replaced the radiator has plenty of water


replace thermostat.then bleed coolant system, this is how you do it.fill the cooling coolant system with 50 / 50 dexcool and water to raise boiling point,straight water will evaporate boil away cause engine to overheat catch fire thats why you need 50 / 50 mixture antifreeze and water.to bleed coolant system first fill coolant system until coolant stay at the full cold mark on the the coolant overflow jug,then you start engine allow it to idle,place the heater and ac control in any ac setting except max and the temperature control to the highest setting,run engine until lower hose to water pump is hot. with the engine hot run the engine speed up to 3000 rpm and allow it return to idle, repeat this 5 times. slowly open the bleed valve on the thermostat housing or look for bleed valve at the water pump heater hose.open bleed valve for 15 seconds to expel any trapped air.then top off the coolant as necessary,and when top radiator hose hot thermostat open up.keep adding cooling to overflow until coolant level stop at full cold mark dont over fill coolant.if engine seem like overheating while looking at cooling gauge turn off engine wait a while until cool off add more coolant until coolant level stay stable and dont drop any.when open radiator overflow cap use large rag over the radiator cap to keep from getting scald open radiator cap a little at a time but dont open radiator cap until engine cool down first.replace the radiator overflow cap, thermostat,and engine coolant temperature sensor and check the cooling fans fuses and relays see what happens.

Where is the bleed valve located on a 1998 pontiac grand prix 2.8 engine? The auto parts store has never heard of a bleed valve.


Was the thermostat changed? I would suggest replacing the thermostat refill the system with new coolant and purge the air out of the system.

Replaced thermostat but still overheating?


Coolant system have bleed points. There is air in your system that needs to be purged out through the purge valves.. There maybe a few. You have to slightly open them when you first fill the system and let the coolant circulate till a little bit of coolant comes from bleed valves then you close them. Letting the system purge air by leaving the radiator cap open is not enough. Are you sure you put the correct temperature thermostat in , and facing the correct way?

When draining radiator for flush the Haynes manual says to "detach coolant air bleed hose from throttle body". Where's this?


This is located at the front of the engine, but is very difficult to get to because many other things are around it. It is not necessary to do this step. When refilling the radiator with fresh coolant, fill it to the top, then set the heater controls to maximum and let engine run with radiator cap off. When the thermostat opens, the coolant will flow thru the system and bleed out all the air. Fill the radiator with additional coolant.

Hi,
The bleeding nipple would be near the water pump rad hose inlet and beneath the thermostat valve cover.
Bleeding is easy, just fill up the radiator and the reservoir w/ coolant run the engine for 5 min and open the bleeding nipples! or Just fill up the radiator before u start the engine, early morning, run the engine for 5 min. untill the thermostat valve opens, open the radiator cap( use a wet rag ), carefull not to open it instantly! Fill up the radiator while the engine runs, add coolant while u slightly reving up the engine.
Do these and open the heater to maximum, air might be inside the core too!

WELL YOU NEED TO DRAIN COOLANT LEVEL BELOW THERMOSTAT LEVEL.YOU HAVE TO DISCONNECT MAF SENSOR LOOSEN AIRDUCT 2 LARGE CLAMPS LOOSEN REMOVE 4 SCREWS TO AIR FILTER COVER LIFT UP REMOVE COVER. Changing a thermastat on a 2003 Caravan


the 1993 caravan had two engines offered a 2.5L 4cylinder and a 3.3L v6........on the 2.5L the thermostat is located on the front of the cylinder head were the top radiator hose attach's.
remove the top hose were it attach's to the thermostat housing and the remove the thermostat housing and lift out the thermostat and replace with the new one making sure the spring on the thermostat is facing the engine replace the thermostat housing and top radiator hose and remove the bleeder screw from the top of the thermostat housing and fill radiator with new antifreeze. when you see antifreeze coming out the bleeder hole replace the bleeder screw.

The 3.3L v6 also has the thermostat at the front of the cylinder head were the top radiator hose attach's the thermostat housing the procher is the same except for bleeding the radiator, to bleed the cooling system remove the coolant temp. sensor it is located just below the thermostat housing and fill radiator with new antifreeze until the antifreeze starts coming out the coolent tempt sensor hole them reinstall the sensor and top of radiator.........GOOD LUCK

No Heat and Overheating in 1999 Chevy Silverado


After replacing the thermostat, you must bleed the air from the cooling system.

To bleed air from the 2.2L and 2.5L engines, remove the plug or sensor on the top of the thermostat housing. Fill the radiator with coolant until the coolant comes out the hole. Since the plug is made out of steel and the thermostat housing is aluminum, it is a good idea to apply an anti-seizing compound or Teflon® tape on the plug threads prior to installation. Install the plug and continue to fill the radiator. This will vent all trapped air from the engine.

Any trapped air in the heating system will have to be displaced by coolant. Once the cooling system is filled, with the radiator cap off, turn of the heater at it's highest setting. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temp. You should see a drop in the coolant level as the air in the heating system is displaced by coolant. Add coolant to the proper level and replace the radiator cap.

Keep a close eye on the coolant level for at least the next couple of weeks. The cooling system is a "closed" system. Any significant decrease in coolant level indicates a problem.
