Question about 1997 Plymouth Breeze

1 Answer

When I come to a stop my car dies and it takes several times to start it. It acts like its not getting gas and it did this when I had less than a quarter of a tank of gas and now it has 3/4 tank and it still does it.

Here is the common cause of engine hesitation, surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of THROTTLE BODY cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

If you have any rubber fuel lines in the fuel system, I would replace them. Over a period of time the insides of the hoses swell up and stop the fuel flow to the engine.

i have an 06 cobalt with the same issue and when my engine light finally came on it showed up as evap system malfunctioning. This is for the emissions system. My code shown was P0440. This can be caused by a faulty or loose gas cap, a purge valve, a vent valve, or the evap canister. I am waiting on the purge valve to arrive now so should know if that takes car of mine in a week, but i have already replaced my gas cap and the problem is still there. Hope this helps you some

Car acted like the battery died/cannot fill gas tank.

Evaporator vent silenoid at rear by gas tank is most likely stopped up. Is the check engine light on? If so, take to Auto Zone and get them to scan it for free. Get codes only and post them.

A couple of things:
Do you have a check engine light?
If yes, have the codes read for problem identification.

Possibly the throttle position sensor, or idle air control valve, or EGR valve, but these are just a guess.

Need those trouble codes to really be useful.
