Question about 1996 Chevrolet Camaro

96 RS Camaro High Idle on Cold Start.

I have a problem with my 96 RS Camaro. Engine is the 3.8 V6. When the engine and outside temp is cold the car will Idle at or above 2000 RPM. Once its warmed up you can restart it and the IDLE will drop to about 1200-1500 RPM. I have already replaced Idle air control valve. EGR Valve and Idle Air control module. Any suggestions.

1996 Jeep cold start heater location

It likely has EFI (electronic fuel injection) and an idle air control valve that regulate idle speed. They can get gummed and fail to have a fast idle when cold, or get stuck the other way, and have a too fast idle all the or regularly take its time slowing down after you take your foot off the gas. An engine temp sensor can also cause a lingering high idle if it reports the engine as still being cold after warm up.

Engine idles high cold or warm. I have checked the crank key-way and all is good.

too fast idle. it is too high right?
but how high? the 4wd model has
a dash tachometer. post that reading.
this has long list of cause.
The hot engine ,idles at 800 rpm A/C off.
the ECU controls that, if it dont idle a 800 hot.
then , : (im skipping cold due to harder to diagose and rpms not stated)

1; Is the coolant temp,
180F min, to 200F max , is it?
if not all EFI cars fail idle her.e.
2: next, is IAC or ISC failure.
the IAC must only be open cold.
the ISC is electric and operates under ECU control
and a 2 fast idle means the ISC has lost control.
it can lose control any time you have air leaks in the intake.
illegal.
the main page on idle is here
http://www.fixkick.com/IDLE-AIR/idle-index-home.html

the 98 specific page is here26 ways to fail. here.
http://www.fixkick.com/IDLE-AIR/16v-idle.html

even a loss distributor base clamp (bad service)
can cause idle to fail.
1: ISC(electric) dirty, clean it.?
2: bad thermostat.
3: IAC (a pure thermo device) stuck open. (my 96 was)

I turn on ignition and vehicle starts to idle real high seems like accelarator cable is sticking

Hi Clucas, If you're talking about a cold engine, the vehicle is fitted with an automatic 'up idle' system. Depending on how cold the ambient temperature is. The colder it is outside the higher the idle, until the engine reaches normal operating temp. The engine should then settle down to the correct idle speed. If however the cold start raises the speed to more than 1350, have a scan carried out. If the idle speed is always at a high rpm, do the same.A leakage of air into the intake manifold can also cause the latter problem. A leakage however will not be evident via a scan. 2001 camaro 3800 eng. when eng is cold oil pressure is high after warms up oil pressure drop very low at idle. why??

When the engine and oil are cold it will show a high pressure because of the viscosity of the oil. When it warms up the oil is thinner. If it doesn't drop below 20-25 psi at warm idle I wouldn't worry about it as that is normal.

05 Lincoln LS 3.0 V6. Outside air temp 32F. Idle decay when cold

This sounds like you have a pcv hose that has become an open vacuum leak. It is located under the upper intake, or given the year your air filter box may not be correctly sealed and possibly have a mass air flow sensor concern. Any Check engine light or codes to work with ? I f you have further questions just leave a comment on my page,

2000 maxima has erratic idle on cold days and will stall out on extremely cold days. Also, have noted antifreeze leak (on ground) on those really cold days. Car runs fine once it reaches normal operating...

It sounds like an engine temp sensor is open.. When your engine is cold or anti-freeze is cold your ECU or ECM gets a signal from the temp sensor for cold engine start. It would make sense that it works fine when hot because the resistance on the sensor is a lot lower. Take an ohm meter if you have one and check the resistance across the temp sensor pins. When the engine is cold the resisitance should be really high. Start and warm up your car to normal temp and check it again. It should be a lot lower now. If not replace it. Hope this helps.
