Question about 1987 Volvo 240
Volvo 240 dl 1987 .. driving down the road, car starts to stutter. Keep accelerating and its hesitating. (almost as if you would put foot on the accelerator and quickly letting off, Repeatedly)....Then car dies.
Attempt to keep restarting it and it just dies. Its turning over, but sputtering. Like its starved for gas. We sit there a few minutes (prob about 10 mins) it cranks right up, drives about 1/2 mile and stalls out again. We let it sit, and it will crank right up and drive ok again for a little while, then die out again. Like its overheating (although temp thing reads fine). Car has run flawless for long time,never any issue like this. All the sudden on MUGGY HOT day (high 90's and very humid) starts with this problem out of the blue. (although we have very many hot muggy days here in NC).
Each time after sitting, the car will crank right up and drive a little ways, then sputter and stop again. Seemingly getting too hot, and starving for gas. Any ideas? We thought the fuel filter, friend says it IS getting fire, but he's not sure what it is. After it sat for about an hour, he was able to drive it up to the store and back with no issues whatsoever. So I'm confused.

Sounds like you need a fuel pump. There is an access panel in the floor of the car to get to the pump.

A dead 7 mos battery is not getting re-charged properly. If alt is ok then it must be wires/connections. Sudden death while driving could be related to bad battery condition - thus the reprieve when turning off and starting over. I would have a real volt meter ( not just dash) attached to this car for a while so that I could see what is going on while driving.

If you can get it running again, get it to an electrical shop where they can test the charging system. If the alternator is still bad, it will continue draining the battery. If it won't run, pull the alternator and take it to a shop that can test it.

If you look at your engine you will a silver fuel rail just at the front of the cylinder head. follow the rail to the air filter box side and you should see a blue cap on what looks like a schrader valve (if the cap is still there). unscrew the blue cap and carefully push in on the schrader valve, if the fuel system is ok there should be a good amount of fuel pressure and fuel will shoot out so be careful.
If there is no fuel that comes out and you've already replaced the pump and filter I don't have a whole lot for you. If there is fuel then I would call your Volvo dealer and see if your car has the extended warranty on the Electronic Throttle Module (ETM). Volvo extended the warranty for 10 yrs or 200,000 miles.
It could be a host of other things, but the ETM's are known to be prone to build up on the throttle blade and sometimes failure. There is also a very good software upgrade they can do to help the operation of the ETM's. I'm hoping your in the U.S.
There was a recall campaign 155 that was specifically for the ETM's

Wow. any number of things. Clogged fuel filter? Fuel pump relay. Try getting in the car when it's quiet around you. Turn the key to "on", not start. You should hear the fuel pumps hum for a few seconds and then stop. If you don't hear them, check your fuse box. They are labeled but I believe #6 is usually the main fuel pump fuse. If fuses are good, then it could be your fuel pump relay. These typically develop cracks in the solder and when they warm up, break contact and theengine dies. The relay is accessed by removing the 7 screws that hold your glovebox in. Slide it out as a unit. Remove the glove box bulb if you're going to be at it any great length of time or your battery will die. The relay is a white rectangular box clipped to a metal frame on the left of the now exposed innards. It has like 6-8 pins. Thump it a couple of times and see if the car will start. If it does, replacethe relay. Order online as much cheaper than dealership.
If you do hear the pumps cycle when you turn the key to on, then most likely you have a bad ignition module. Your '88 has LH2.2 so there is no crank sensor to go bad. The ignition module is mounted to the driver's side under hood by air cleaner. Small flat black rectangle w/ silver metal base.
