Just picked up this 1996 GPZ 1100 ABS. Starts ok with full choke but does not idle. Need to keep the choke on to keep the bike running. Once I close the choke the bike does not idle. Checked for air...

It sounds like the carbs are gummed up from sitting. The fuel that we get now is very unstable and gums up quickly. When you choke the bike it is bypassing the carbs and that is why it runs. I would suggest a carb clean and fuel tank flush, the carbs are very intricate and should only be worked on by a qualified technician.
Thanks,
Steve

1992 Honda CB 750 Nighthawk will not idle without choke

Hi, Emeraldcp and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.
4. Vacuum line from the petcock to intake manifold cracked.
5. Float needle and seat sticking.
6. Float level too low.
7. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.
8. Idle adjusting screw set too low.
9. Air/fuel mixture screw set too lean.
10. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.
11. Slow fuel jet clogged.
12. Faulty fuel pump.
13. Faulty auto choke or wiring connection.

1995 Yamaha XV 250 Virago Is there a need to adjust the choke (start) cable? If so, how is it adjusted. I think I'm having a problem with my choke and was planning to replace the cable and starter...

The problems with a plunger style choke happen when the rubber on the bottom becomes deformed and does not seal or the spring does not push the plunger down hard enough, or the cap breaks so the plunger is not pushed down hard enough. If you put your finger over the hole and the bike runs properly your bike is running on choke. You have to block the hole deep inside the carb to shut off the choke. I assume the original problem was that the bike would not idle .If this is the case, take the carb apart remove the slow jet and clean the jet and the carb body out so fuel will flow at idle. This should fix your no idle problem.

The neutral safety switch is out of adjustment. Most bike won't start unless it is in Neutral or the clutch lever pulled in. Get a new battery and charge it up full. The intake boots need to be replaced or it will run lean. That is why you need to chock it to get it to run.

This bike is a 2007 and is extremely cold blooded

check for air leak where carb meets intake manifold.air cleaner element must be in good condition and prpoerly seated.

Bike wont run when choke is at half way setting

Sounds a lot like fouled fuel jets in your carb; you may have a little work to do.
If the jets do not allow sufficient fuel to pass, using the choke can 'cheat' the carburetor by restricting the flow of air and restoring the fuel-air ratio. You can't ignore this problem since the 'cheated' condition does not let the engine develop the power for which it was designed.

Will only run with full choke and absolutely no throttle.

Carbs gummed up. Need a serious cleaning or a full ruubers replacement/rebuild kit. Gas turns to gummy when left stting in the fuel bowls.

Use a couple of cans of Sea Foam.. best stuff in the world.

Wont start without choke

I am having a similiar problem. bmw r 1100 s will only start with full choke and will die if I cut off choke or give it any throttle. This is my first bike and it has been sitting in a garage for 2 years. I took out the carbs, cleaned them and rebuilt them. I didn't find any residual in the carbs and they were very clean. Today, I was able to get the bike running and took it down the neighborhood but after the bike warms up it idles at 6K! Man... If I can't find any answers from this forum, I will probably drop it off at the motorcycle shop just down the hill from me. Any suggestions anyone? I think I will try to drain the fuel and give it new gas. But still....

Starting problems

Check the compression. If it has low compression it will always be difficult to start. I have the same bike. It is a really good starter, comparatively to other older 'cycles I own. 1) Check the fuel level in the tank, and be sure to turn the fuel switch (left side of bike below tank and seat) to On, or even Reserve 2) In stock tuning, my bike likes full choke for cold start, in any ambient temperature, it likes to warm up with the choke on, until it starts to sputter from the rich mixture. 3) I believe this bike has vacuume tube that goes to the fuel petcock, this shuts off fuel to carbs when bike is not running. Thus if the bike has not run in a while, or the carbs drained, it will take several start attempts to get the carb float bowls filled. 4) This bike is hard to start if the battery is old or marginally charged. 5) Also pull the spark plugs, if they are brown, or black, change them. 6) check the air cleaner, if it is too dirty it will essentially act like a choke
