Protect means that there's a short on one of the amplifiers - the fact that is extremely hot is not helping, it shows the short is still acting and doing more damage as we speak.
Put the volume at 0, close the amp , take out all the speakers and wait for it to cool down then start it again - if the message is still there then one of the amplifiers is shorted and must be replaced (this is a major failure - let it to a trained repairman). If the message isn't there then one of the speakers is shorted - close the amp and connect them one at the time till the message reappears then junk the respective speaker and replace it with a similar one (make sure the replacement speaker has the exact same impedance)

Most likely you have a speaker short, you need to check the ohms on each speaker disconnected from receiver if they are 8 ohms they should be close to that on the meter no more than a 1 and half ohm varience to what the speaker ohms says on the back. If they are ok you need to disconnect speaker wire from receiver and check for a short in the wire by connecting ohm meter leads to ends of the speaker wire you should get no reading if the wire is good. If this is all good you have a bad output transister in your receiver, but i dout this is the case because these transisters normally short to ground and blow a fuse. Unplug the unit. Carefully unscrew the screws for the case. Probably 4 screws, 2 on each side of the unit. Remove the cover. Look for the fuses, and replace with exact same type/specs of the faulty fuse. If the fuse, is on a printed circuit board, be careful dislodging the fuse. Hope this helps.

try to unplug it 30 seconds and plug it back in if that doesnt work it may be a fuse or something on the mother board that needs to be look at by a professional manufacter technician.

Strange dramas you are having there. I would suggest first, that you switch the unit off overnight(unplug at the wall) to allow for a fulll hard reset. Then fire it up in the morning again, and see if it behaves itself. I found a user manual for you online here

It is a good amp that you have, and hopefully resetting it will sort it out for you. If not, please do get back to me here and we shall look deeper..

Switch off the unit. Then hold down Sorround, Exit, Memory & Clear buttons all together and then switch on the power. This should work.

Hello Meredith, for what you are saying, you could have a problem in the cable that you use to send the signal you want to record, or the microphone cable or the line cable
put to record the Marantz, without any cable connected to the inputs and listen with the headphones, if the hum is, if not, try to change the cables for others of the same type, if you use microphone, controls the connectors, which do not have humidity or rust in the contacts

Hola Meredith, por lo que comentas, podrias tener un problema en el cable que utilizas para enviar la se?al que quieres grabar, o el cable de micr?fono o el cable de linea
pon a grabar el Marantz, sin ning?n cable conectado en las entradas y escucha con los auriculares, si el zumbido esta, si no esta, prueba cambiar los cables por otros del mismo tipo, si usas micr?fono, controla los conectores, que no tengan humedad u oxido en los contactos
