This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some images of convergence problems.

pam4402,

Most manufacturers today have taken advantage of the diagnostics available when circuits fail. Your flashing light indicates generally where the problem is. This is disigned to help us technicians find the problem easier and faster. You did not mention the number of blinks. Toshiba is secretive with their error codes. You would need to buy a service manual from http://www.servicemanuals.net to obtain them. Cost is about $16.00 US for a download. This would provide the information that you need.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating. Please consider a testimonial.

my name is rico i work on tvs sometimes. First you need to poen the back of you tv, second look for the ics in board. they start with stk393 or 392 . like skt393-110 or 393-120, or 392-040. After you find those stks, you need replace them and check for bad fuses or resistor for the right ohms. if you need those stks, I have them, please feel free to call me anytime. 602-810-7149 i live in mesa az

the 43h71 has a pair of convergence ics that commonly go bad and cause this problem. replace original stk392-110 with stk392-120. the upgrades have a collector rated at 4 amps vs the 110's 3 amps and should be more reliable.

also know that they hyperboard in this set can cause squiggly lines throughout but will not affect the convergence.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit wiith instructions from the links below.

I am going to give you a general idea of what to look for.

First: the set has several pico fuses on the power board--green or orange and look like resistors--check all them first.

Second: the most common problem these sets develop is a short in the convergence circuit--if it is bad enough fuses will or will not blow and the set will shut off just blinking--If I was working on it I would locate the two STK-392-110 convergence chips which are usually in the middle of the set on heat sinks--not real easy to get at but what I would do is UNSOLDER all 18 pins on each chip and then see if the set turns on.

If it does come on convergence will be awful but you will know your trouble is there. Two of the fuses I mentioned protect this area--usually 5 amp. I will attach a photo of what they look like (for a different brand but same kind of part) so you know what to look for.

If this is not your problem you would need a schematic to troubleshoot by checking for physical shorts or missing voltages etc.

While the chips are not easy to get at---they are the second thing I would look at.

If this helped you rate this solution as I do this here for free.

unfortunately the green color bulb must have burned. you should go to a repair shop.

The mirror that projects the image on the screen from the lights below is most likely out of alignment, this is a very delicate adjustment to make. If your not familure with doing this, it will need to go to a shop. I hope this helps, if you have any other questions please contact me. Good luck.

The blurry must be defined as out of convergence or out of focus,If there is a lines of color on the pictures edges, its convergence, if the picture is not sharp the focus is the problem. The common cause of convergence problem is the convergence drive chip(stk) and might be the cause of shutdown too.The focus problem is commonly contributed by the projector lenses, in most cases the coolant liquid leaks and drip on the board, this causes shutdown too.The lenses must check first for any leak before the replacement of IC(stk).
