Hi puckling, my name is John. Welcome to FixYa. There are several factors that this could be from the regulator, audio IC, or just a capacitor leaking down. Would be hard to track down without the proper testing equipment. You could take the cover off and look for cold solder joints and resolder them. Thanks for choosing FixYa...John

yeppers you have a common problem of the audio output IC being bad or a defective speaker. If there is an external speaker jack, try another speaker just to make sure. Good Luck

Where the unit was made is a good indication of how old it is. If it was made in Taiwan it is real old. Philippians is after that and Malaysia is the newest.

Other then that you can contact Cobra directly for them to look up the serial number.

Cobra website.

make sure the mic is good. If for some reason the mic went bad, it will not receive or transmit.

As for the one with no receive, it most likely needs a new final.

If lightning hit your antron, it would be in pieces.

typically you cannot "get cops" with a CB radio. Completely different frequency and broadcast method.

However, if local police departments monitor ch 9 which is known as the emergency channel, you can call on there for help. Not many police stations monitor it any more.

If your TX (Transmit) meter does not work at all, it might or might not be a faulty press-to-talk switch, or faulty wiring. More often, it's the final amplifier stage that's defective if you don't have a carrier (signal) when you key the mike. That will require a qualified Tech to make those repairs. I'm basing this on my experience as a Communications Technician since my Navy days and CB Dealer since the mid 1970s. Thanks

This is never a good sign. This is usually a sign of a bad final.

If the radio doesn't transmit in SSB or AM, then it either means, Both finals are bad, (which is rare) or there is another problem causing the problem.

If it transmits in SSB, but not AM, then the AM final is blown and needs to be replaced. Its a job for a tech.

If both SSB and Am are not working it needs troubleshooting by a tech.

If you feel ambitious, you can pull the bottem cover off being careful of the speaker wires and make sure the TX section is connected.

Inside the radio, there will be one wire with a plug that is hooked to a pin near the center of the radio. And an empty pin. The empty pin is the test pin, ignore it. Make sure the plug is on the pin all the way, and not loose. If its on good, then it needs further troubleshooting.

Other things you can check:
Make sure the mic works.
Make sure the mic gain is up.
