They can be used indoors or out. The range depends on line of sight. Imagine a flashlight, if you can see the beam, you will be able to talk. How far is that? In reality, not far for these low power off the shelf with short antenna radios. Expect 0.5 to 1 mile, more if outside and flat, less if indoor and lots of walls.

Is the mic plugged into the radio? Do you hear any hissing at all?Do you have an external speaker hooked to it if you do ,unhook it if not hook one to it , maybe your internal speaker is blown. Could be a switching diode.Could be your final . Could be you squelch knob isn't turned completely to the left or your RF gain isn't all the way to the right .

Its like the wiring in your house. That little three prong plug. There are three wires, one black, one white, and one green. The green is a ground wire , the black is neg flow and the white is positive flow. Well the red wire is hot ,the yellow wire is neg flow, and the black is ground. Some times the yellow wire isn't even connected. Look inside your radio and you will only see a red and black wire???you will have to google the radio model as such ( 77-118 owners manual)
