That is because the drivers are not available for Win7. If you install Win 7 Ultimate and run in XP mode, it might work.

This error could be caused by dirt on the encoder strip or on the rod on which the cartridge carrier rides, the encoder strip is out of position or a faulty cartridge (one or both).

First try cleaning the travel rod. Turn off the printer and unplug it. (I recommend unplugging the power cord from the printer and then from the wall outlet.) Open the front cover to access the ink cartridge area. With a tissue or paper towel, clean off the exposed section of the metal rod that the cartridge carrier runs on. Pinch the cartridge belt and slide the cartridge carrier over to the other side and clean the rest of the rod. Then slide the cartridge carrier back to the home position. (The tissue will end up covered with ink so be careful about getting ink everywhere.)

Also be careful while doing this cleaning step to avoid bumping the clear encoder strip. If this strip is dislodged from the cartridge carrier, you will need to slide it back into position. This entails carefully pushing it down and then back up along the back to the cartridge carrier so that it fits in the slot in the carrier. Sometimes you need to also move it forward and back before moving it into the slot. Close the front cover and plug the printer back in. Then turn it on and see if the error persists.

Next try cleaning the encoder strip (it is plastic). Use the same steps as above (turn off, unplug, and open front cover). Then move the cartridge carrier to the center (pinch the belt again) and remove the cartridges. Then move the cartridge carrier to the left. With a soft cloth clean the exposed section of the encoder strip, then move the cartridge carrier to the right and clean the rest of the strip. Get the encoder strip back into position if it is out of place. (See above for the details.) Replace the ink cartridges (after moving the carrier to the center again). Slide the cartridge carrier back to the right, close the printer cover and plug it in. Turn on the printer and see if the error persists.Work quickly - the cartridges should not be out of the printer for more than 30 minutes at a time.

For pictures of the encoder strip, see http://support.lexmark.com/index?page=content&id=SO3370&actp=search&viewlocale=es_ES&userlocale=ES_ES&segment=SUPPORTproductCode%3D&productCode=LEXMARK_X6150&searchid=1284653009138 .

Next try trouble-shooting the cartridges. Remove one cartridge at a time with the unit unplugged. Then plug it back in and turn it on. Press Copy, then press Options 10 times (or until you see Maintenance on the LCD screen). Press the Left arrow button once (it should read Self-test Page). Then press Select. The test page should print. Replace the first cartridge and repeat these steps with the second cartridge removed. Also do the self-test with both cartridges in place.
Replace the cartridge(s) if the problem is with one of them.

Contact Lexmark for repair if the printer is still under warranty and none of the above steps help. Otherwise, decide if a repair is worthwhile or if replacing the printer is a better option. (It's a minimum of $50 just for the service center to diagnose the problem plus the cost of shipping the printer.)

I hope this helps.

If you are encountering power problems with your printer, please go through the following checklist:

  • Make sure the power cord is plugged in securely and directly to the power outlet. Power surge protectors can draw power away from the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the power outlet and the back of the printer and then reconnect it.
  • Check the power supply box (if there is one) to see if it is warm or cold, as there could be a defective power supply issue.
  • If there is access to a voltmeter, test the power supply to ensure that it registering the correct amount of voltage (most Lexmark printers have a 30Volt output).
  • Make sure the correct power supply is connected to the printer.

Please make sure all cable connections (especially the phone cable) is properly connected and secured on the back of the printer and into the phone jack in the wall. You may unplug and re-plug both ends of the phone cable just to make sure.
Make sure that the printer is connected to the right phone jack in the wall for faxing.

Re-brick your printer. Pull out the power supply, black box where the power cord is plugged in at the back of the printer, and put it back after 30 seconds.

Should the problem continue, please don't hesitate to contact Lexmark Technical Support Center for additional assistance.

Try to open the printer cover and remove the cartridges. Check the cartridge area and make sure there are no obstructions along the cartridge carrier's path. Check the encoder strip (transparent tape) found behind the cartridge carrier along with the carrier belt and make sure it's still in its position and dislodged from its place.
If all is well inside the printer, remove the power adapter (black box behind the printer where the power cord is plugged in) and re-plug after 30 seconds. When the printer turns on, re-insert the cartridges.
Try to print again to verify that the problem is fixed.
I hope this helps.

Please try this approach.
  1. Disconnect the printer from your computer.
  2. Re-brick your printer by pulling out the power supply - black box behind the printer where the power cord is plugged in to, and re-plug after 10 seconds. This will help reset the printer.
  3. When the printer turns on, reconnect the printer to your computer. Try to print a document again, make a copy or scan to verify that other functions are working properly now.

1st try unplugging the printer to rest it, it that fails remove and reload the software and drivers for the printer following the installation instructions exactly, if that fails you should consider a new printer in your future as the cost to repair can be close to the replacement cost.

Make sure to set the correct paper setting on the printer or the Lexmark software before sending the print job. Adjust the printer's paper guide to the correct envelope dimension.

Please try this approach instead:

1. Browse to Start -> Run... and type in NET STOP SPOOLER (this will stop the print spooler service)

2. Browse to your windows\system32\spool\PRINTERS\ folder. You should see files there ending in .SPL and .SHD created around the time you tried to print - delete these files.

3. Browse to Start -> Run... and type in NET START SPOOLER (this will restart the print spooler service)

4. Double click the printer icon in the lower-right corner of your taskbar to examine your print job queue and browse to View -> Refresh.

I hope this information has been helpful.

A quick fix for most communication errors can be achieved by resetting the printer and/or rebooting the PC. Simply disconnect the printer from your computer. Reboot your pc. Unplug and re-plug the printer into the power source to reset it. When the printer turns on, reconnect it to your computer. Then try to print again once the computer fully recognizes the USB connection.

If that doesn't help, try the steps below:

1. Disconnect the printer from your computer.

2. Re-brick your printer. Pull out the power supply, black box where the power cord is plugged in at the back of the printer, and put it back after 30 seconds.

2. On your computer, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes.

3. Delete the Lexmark print object.

4. Reboot your pc.

5. When your pc turns on, reconnect the printer.

6. Wait until your pc fully recognizes the USB connection. To check, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes. If you see a new Lexmark print object in the list, then try to print a document again to verify that the problem is fixed.

You may also try to update your printer driver by visiting the Lexmark website at http://bit.ly/e5hjlF. Select your operating system, download and execute the file.

I hop this helps.

I've enjoyed using a Lexmark printer with my Macs (a G4/PowerBookand
iMac Indigo, both running OS X 10.2.3), so when I needed an all-in-one
for my hobby shop, I bought a Lexmark X6170. Looks like a great unit,
but unfortunately, I cannot find any Macintosh drivers or downloads
for it on Lexmark's site. I contacted Lexmark's Customer Support, and
received the following unhelpful replies from India:

"Please accept my heartfelt apologies for the problems you are
experiencing with your Lexmark product. But Lexmark X6150/6170 do not
support MAC."

"To the best of my knowledge, there are currently no plans to develop
Mac drivers to support this model. Thank you for notifying us of this
request. I will forward your comments on to our development
department, as it is only through input from you, our customers, that
we can make these important business decisions."

I'm hoping forum members can help me out with some kind of
work-around, as it seems (to my naive mind, anyway) that the elements
to make this unit work with my Macs are available; they just need to
be gathered together. Here's my reasoning -- please tell me where/if
I'm wrong:

First, I'm assuming that it's very likely there's a printer driver for
the printer section of the X6170; since most Lexmark printers are
supported on the Mac (like my Lexmark Z22), there must be a driver for
one of Lexmark's many Mac-supported printers that would work with the
X6170.

Second, the scanner is a USB input device, so the interfaceis no
problem. I'm assuming that, like most modern scanners, the one in the
X6170 is TWAIN-compliant, so it should work directly in Photoshop, or
with a TWAIN-compliant third-party scanning app like SilverFast.

The copier and fax functions of the X6170 are, of
course,stand-alone,so there's no problem there.

I really don't want to give up on the Lexmark X6170 (especially since
the original packaging got thrown away!). Please help me explore some
"out of the box" solutions to mating my Macs with the X6170.

Try to re-insert the color cartridge into the printer and make sure it is properly seated in the cartridge carrier.
If that doesn't help, try to clean the print nozzles. Please follow the steps below:
1. Press Copy. 2. Press Options until Maintenance appears on the display. 3. Press the right arrow until Clean Cartridges appears on the display. 4. Press Select. A nozzle page prints, forcing ink through the nozzles to clean the clogged nozzles. 5. Print your document again to verify that your print quality has improved.
