Printer will not recognize refilled black HP cartridge (#74)

After the printer (HP J6480) told me I was low on Black Ink, I refilled the
cartridge (HP74) with ink according to directions. Ink is from 'The Printer Ink Warehouse' . I've tried a master reset on the printer and have cleaned
both color and black printer contacts on the printer and on the cartridges.
Still to no avail. Does HP put something in the ink that its printers only recognize or as one of your postings said, it remembers the serial numbers on the first 3-5 cartridges. I believe I am on my 2nd cartridge for this printer. Thoughts?

Try to get your printer to recognize the new cartridge; go to start - printer and faxes -right click on printer - preferences (printing preferences) -settings -load factory settings. Print test page Ctrl+P

Please post if that worked.

If the self-cleaning cycle does not solve the problem, try turning the printer off overnight to allow the ink to soften. Turn the printer on the next day and try printing a test pattern to see whether the problem has either disappeared or become less noticeable. This ink-saving procedure can work effectively because sometimes the dried ink on the print head needs time to soften before the printer head can be cleaned completely. Try running the self-cleaning utility again one or more times.
Steps for Manually Cleaning the Printer Head

If the overnight cleaning still does not work, there may be a layer of thick ink that is blocking the holes of the printer's head. The next option is to manually clean the printer head. Follow these steps:

* Determine from the owner's manual where the print head is located.
* Remove the ink cartridge from your printer and then dip a cotton swab in hot water or isopropyl alcohol and rub it against the print head. This should loosen any crusted ink. NOTE: Be careful, especially if you use isopropyl alcohol to clean your print heads: Some printers use rubber gaskets, and if you get isopropyl alcohol on the gaskets it could dry them out.
* For models where the print head is in the printer, drop 7 to 10 drops of isopropyl alcohol (91% denatured isopropyl alcohol - not 'rubbing' alcohol) down the ink receptacle area where the ink actually flows from the cartridge into the head. Run a few self-cleaning utilities. If possible, allow the printer to sit a few hours or overnight and repeat the self-cleaning utility.
* If the print head is in the cartridge, soak the cartridge print head in hot water. Allow it to soak overnight. Dry the print head area with a paper towel. Repeat the self-cleaning utility.
* If the hot water soak did not unclog the print head, place the cartridge printer head in isopropyl alcohol and allow it to soak overnight. Use a damp paper towel to wipe off the print head area and dry carefully. Try the self-cleaning utility again.
* If the alcohol soak did not unclog the print head in the cartridge you may need to purchase a new cartridge. This will provide new print heads that won't be clogged. Contact a service technician for repair of print heads in the printer if the alcohol did not unclog the printer head.

I had the same problem, and the cause turned out to be the cover switch not being fully pushed in. On the underside right edge of the top cover, there's a little triangular protrusion that pushes down a black rectangular button (the cover switch) when the cover is closed. The problem occurs because the flimsy top cover is made of plastic and flexes slightly when you close it. This means that sometimes, the right edge of the cover won't seat properly even though it appears as if the cover is closed all the way. When this happens, the triangular protrusion isn't fully pressing the switch down.

To test if this is this is happening, send a print job to the printer and wait for the "top cover is open" error message to appear. Next, open the top cover door and locate the cover switch. It's a little black button in a rectangular hole at the right edge of the doorway near the ink cartridges. Take a pen or a car key and use it to push the cover switch down. You can also use your fingertip to do this if it's skinny enough. If you keep the cover switch pressed down, the power button should start blinking to indicate a print job is coming through. If the print job actually starts printing, then you know the problem was the cover switch.

In my case, all I had to do the fix the problem was close the cover and make sure it was fully seated by firmly pressing down the right edge of the cover until I heard a plasticky "click" noise. After that, the problem went away.

Hope this helps.

There is a windows 98 driver available on the HP website for the HP Deskjet 5150. Go to the main website (www.hp.com) and click on software and driver downloads (about 2/3 of the way down the page). from there click download drivers and software radio button, then in the "for product" box enter your printer model (Deskjet 5150). Then the top option on the right hand column is Windows 98.

I have an HP Deskjet 5150 that will not print.

I have an HP Deskjet 5150 that will not print. Here is what I have done. Using a Windows 7 computer, which has not had this printer connected before, I plug in the printer first to the wall and then, after powering it on, to the computer via USB. Windows goes about installing the driver with no apparent problems. I then restart the computer as a just-in-case kind of thing. After the restart I try to print a test page which doesn't print. The printer lights do not change from their default state, which is a steady power light and no other lights lit. I check the print queue which shows the test page as printing. After about an hour of nothing I delete the test page and then try printing an image. Same as before the printer does nothing and the image just sits in the print queue. Just for fun I try something interesting by installing the printer on one of my linux servers. The install goes fine and CUPS sees the printer as on-line and ready to print. I then use CUPS to print a test page. Just like with windows nothing happens with the printer sitting there with only a steady power light showing. I have already left the printer completely unplugged and have also taken out and reset the print cartridges but to no avail.

Why would you want to bypass the alignment phase? That is the time that the printer sets it's registration. You would most likely suffer a poorer print image if you were to bypass, I recommend you perform that step.

Try taking out the print cartridges and then putting them back in and make sure they are really well inserted when you replace them. Then slam the lid down to really make sure its shut and it should resolve the problem.
