Is this a wireless printer? If so, go into your computer setting, hit printers, and then hit search for printer. Have the printer on before you do this. It will find it on its own. Good Luck, and let me know if this works.

I would reinstall the driver and see if that first fixes the problem. be sure to restart the printer and the computer after installing the driver.

You can find the driver from here:

Any of the 30 series errors say that the carriage is not free to move from side to side across the paper. You need to look close on each side of the machine where the carriage travels to see if there's a paper scrap stopping it. Also the encoder strip could be out of the slot in the carriage assembly. If all is OK you need a shop repair to determine if the logic or carriage pcb's are OK.

36 usually means that a paper is jammed. You will have to open it up and manually remove the paper.

Welcome to Fixya

Depending on the current settings in the printer driver, you can make changes to the settings to improve print quality:
  1. For the Color/Grayscale setting, select Color. For the Image Type setting, select Photo.
  2. For the Media Type setting, if the setting is currently Plain Paper, change it to Inkjet Paper. If the setting is currently Inkjet Paper, change it to Brother Premium Glossy Photo Paper.
Do the following to access the printer driver and adjust these settings.

Click START -> PRINTERS AND FAXES. Right click the Printer Icon for your model and click Properties. Click the Advanced tab. Click the Printing Preference button and then click the Advanced tab. In the Color/Grayscale section click Color and in the Image Type section click Photo. Click OK.

Doing reference on your issue. Double check the ink cartridge to make sure that the cartridge is correctly installed. Also be sure that the black ink cartridge used is compatible with the machine.

The next thing to do is a cartridge cleaning as the belief is that the print head is blocked. If you have done a thurough cleaning, the next thing to do is replace the black ink cartridge to be certain the ink cartridge is not faulty.

I have included print head cleaning instructions in case you have not done this cleaning process.

here is some information from the Brother support site:

If one or more of the ink colors are missing from pages printed by your machine (i.e. received faxes, copies and/or documents printed from the PC etc), nozzles in the print head may be clogged, or the ink cartridge in question may not be installed correctly. Verifying that the ink cartridges are installed correctly and/or cleaning the print head may solve the problem.

Cleaning the print head may solve the problem. When cleaning the print head, you are given the option to clean BLACK ONLY, one of the three colors (CYAN, YELLOW, or MAGENTA), or all four colors at once. For this issue we recommend cleaning only the affected color. If more than one color is missing then choose ALL.

When the machine completes cleaning the print head, press Color(Colour) Start. A Print Quality Check Sheet will print.

The error message "Print Unable 46" is an indication that the machines ink absorbers are almost full. The ink absorbers hold liquid and dried ink after it has been purged from the print head. These absorbers can control enough ink for the expected life of the machine.

There is a possibility that this message may have occurred in error. Upgrading the firmware of the Brother machine may resolve the issue. Follow the procedure below to determine if a firmware update is required:
-if the display screen is displaying an error message, press the STOP/EXIT key to change the LCD to the main screen.
-press the # and * key at the same time. The first 2 characters on the top row will determine the ROM version.

If the ROM version is OE or greater (example: OF, OG, OH, etc), the firmware does NOT need to be upgraded. If the ROM version is OA, OB, OC or OD, follow the procedure on this link to upgrade the firmware.

If the message "Print Unable 46" continues to appear on the display the Brother machine after completing the firmware upgrade and your machine is within warranty (even if it's not under warranty you have to do the same thing), you have to take it to a Brother Authorized Service Center. http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/public/us/us/en/faq/faq/000000/002600/000059/faq002659_000.html?reg=us&c=us&lang=en&prod=mfc290c_all&Cat=11

One of the main causes for paper jams is the presence of dirt, dust, or debris in your toner cartridge. The paper coming into the cartridge would get stuck. So clean your printer regularly. Remove the dust from the printer. Also find out whether any jams occurred in the sensor hole in the upper part of the rotating drum. Do not touch the roller while cleaning. If the oil in your body gets into the roller, the printing media cannot roll over it properly and you can't get rid of the printer problem.

Access the internal maintenance mode by pressing the Menu/Set button, then press * 2 8 6 4 within 2 seconds. This should put you in the maintenance mode menu. Enter 80, and then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If number is over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3.

This will reset the purge count value. Then the printer will restart, hopefully without the annoying cannot clean message.

Some times this happens because of using cheap compatible ink cartridges if this is the case change the ink cartridges.
