Question about GE GSH22SGRSS Side by Side Refrigerator
My GE refridgerator is about 4 years old and recently began to make a "howling" sound? it is very loud and appears to be coming from the freezer section only. Any Ideas?
The problem you are having is in the main control board. ge has had a problem with this part causing the fan motor to go into high and low speed which causes the howling noise. unfortunately it is a costly fix, around $125 for the part. if you are savy to changing this part it is a matter of unplgging about 5 connections and replugging them. the new board has an extra set of pin that nothing connects to. READ the instuctions and it is a simple fix, saving about $50-60 in labor costs.

My GE GSH22SGRESS has a howling noise comes from the evap. fanin the freezer. After I took it out, cleaned up and put it back in, the howling noise disappeared for several hours. Then it came back. Any time I tried to reseat the fan again, or changed the digital setting for temperature, the noise went away for a few hours while the fan running, then it ... comes back ! It certainly drives me crazy.
Is it the fan or the control board ?
It appears that the problem relates to the fluctuation of fan speed which is caused by the voltage jittering - driven by the control board.
