Dish changing channel to new recording while watching *pre-recorded* program

When I am watching a pre-recorded program on Dish, a new timed recording will start and the Dish will automatically turn to the new channel that has started to record. This just started happening a couple of weeks ago - before I could be watching an already recorded show, and the timers would start without interrupting what I was currently viewing. We have a lot of timers set, and it's very annoying to be watching a playback of a recorded show and have it stop and switch to the new recording in the middle. I can go to my recorded shows and start it up again, but it's annoying and a pain. Is there a setting I need to change somewhere? Thanks!

I tried unplugging to no avail - it is still switching channels during recorded programs. I did realize that it may only be switching to programs that are being recorded straight to our external hard drive, rather than the DVR (which we started doing a couple of weeks ago, hence the problem being noticed a couple of weeks ago). Could be some kind of glitch with that? Thank you for your response - we aren't ready to exchange our receiver at this point, but if other errors occur we will call Dish or contact you. I appreciate the help!

The EHD shouldn't cause any problems while recording. If you're able to isolate it, or can test recording as normal, that can provide more insight. Just give us a contact with what you decide to do!

I was able to test it - when recording to the DVR there was no problem. I have isolated it to a problem only when recording to the EHD. I still don't want to go through all the hassle of changing out the receiver for that, but it would be great if there was some kind of fix that could be sent through an update or something!

That's a great suggestion, rjvdw! I will be sure to pass that forward, but at this time we have no updates on that functionality for the equipment.

Rjvdw,

Try unplugging the receiver for 10 seconds then plugging it back in, and see if the problem is resolved. The receiver should only switch if you are watching live TV instead of a recording.

If the problem persists, and you are for sure not on Live TV, the receiver may need to be replaced. If it continues you can send me an email at thomas.faust@dishnetwork.com, and I can assist you further!

Hi, poog_23350, I caught your post! How a Duo DVR receiver works is that the TV you have it set to record on will not allow you to change the channel while the recording is in progress. The other TV, that isn't recording anything, can be used freely to flip through channels.

In this case, it's TV2, the one upstairs in your daughter's room, that's currently set to record on while the downstairs TV is free to use. This can be adjusted by pulling up the Main Menu with the Menu button on the remote, selecting option 8, then option 5, and changing the TV1/TV2 setting there on the Record Plus screen.

If you'd like a receiver capable of allowing channel changing while recording a program, our VIP 612 receiver is a Solo receiver that acts like a Duo. What this means is that it has one TV output and two tuners. Along with being able to change channels while a recording is in progress with this type of receiver, you can also record two programs on two different channels simultaneously.

Hope that helps!

This is a problem that many have. If you are recording on TV1, and the receiver is in dual mode, then you are only able to watch what you record. But you can set your recording to TV1, and then put the receiver into single mode, and switch from the recording to live TV.

We would be happy to help you with that. The first thing we would recommend checking is if the "Record Plus" feature is "Enabled", this can be found to the left of the "Record Preferences" on the "Record Plus" screen. The other thing we would recommend is to ensure that the tuner that you are viewing is for the TV1. You can swap between the tuners by pressing "Input" button while in SAT mode.

This should get things set up the way you want it. Thanks for choosing DISH Network!

Hello! Dan Busa here with DISH Network customer service. This is actually how your DVR is supposed to function. A 622 is a dual tuner reciever meaning it's capable of watching or recording two live shows at a time. When you record a show you tie up one tuner, there are two work arounds. You can get an additional dvr receiver or you can set up record preferences and have everything automatically record to tv2.

Can;t record on VCR since Comcast went Digital

I have Dish Network and a DVR and I do not know what I would do without it. I can record 2 shows at once and watch to 2 recorded programs while recording two shows. But getting to your problem... It sounds like the vcr cannot process the digital signal. You could try hooking up the vcr to the rca inputs from the cable box but you will only be able to record whatever channel the cable box is on. Any way you hook them up the programming of the vcr to change channels at different times for different programs probably won't work now. It sounds like Direct TV with two DVRs will solve your recording needs.

Problem with DISH DVR 625

You can accomplish this by either going to the specific TV and selecting the record option at the time the program is about to come on or you can press menu-8-5 and change the record preferences. You can either set the DVR to record programs to the TV2 location by default or TV1 by enabling the record plus feature. In dual mode without record plus enabled all programs you select to record default to the tuner you are viewing e,g, if watching tv1 and selecting to record a program in the future it will record to the tv1 location. In single mode all recordings default to tv2 so you can continue to watch live tv from tv1. I hope this answers your question and thanks for using Fix Ya. Let me know if I can further assist you.

Tivo and direct tv

No, unfortunately there is not. That tivo only has 1 tuner, so you can only record or watch 1 live program. You can however watch a pre-recorded program while recording a live program. If you have directv, you can step up and get their hr20 dvr. It's not a tivo by any means, but it has 2 tuners so you can record 2 things at once and watch a pre-recorded show. It takes a little while to get used to the interface, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty straightforward.

You can also get an older DVR w/ tivo (hr10) however, it will not get ANY of the new MPEG4 High Def channels that are out there.

If you have an hdtv, then you really should grab an hr20, give directv customer retention a call and ask what they can do for you. You'll need a new slimline dish and they'll come out install it and everything you need for watching off the new satellites and enjoying the new mpeg4 hd channels (the old hd channels are in mpeg2).

Good luck.

Changing Channels

Unfortunately, no. The tuner in your DVD recorder works differently than how your satellite receiver works. You *must* use the satellite receiver to select the active channel, and then send that channel to one of the inputs on your recorder. You can then record that channel. Unless your satellite receiver is has "dual tuners" in it, you are stuck watching the same channel that the DVD recorder is recording. If your goal is primarily time-shifting of shows (as opposed to archiving shows forever to DVD), you might consider getting a different satellite receiver with a built-in DVR (hard disk recorder). These allow you to mark shows in advance, have them recorded to the hard drive, and then you can watch them whenever you want, skipping all the commercials. You also get the ability to pause and rewind live TV.
