Question about GE Profile PSW26P Stainless Steel Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

How can I remove the ice drawer of my GE Profile side by side integrated ice machine?

There is a large clump of ice and it appears connected to a mechanism in the back. Is there something I need to disconnect in order to remove the ice drawer?

I actually wasn't sure if the ice was blocking the drawer from opening and attached to the mechanism inside or if there was something connected to the drawer at the back. All I knew was that the drawer was stuck.. Re-reading my question and your post helped me realize that the issue was the ice had built up inside and was preventing the drawer from opening easily. After carefully shaking the drawer, the ice broke up and I could finally free the drawer. BEWARE.. do not use the "quick ice" function on this fridge if you have not read the manual. I did this and that's how I wound up with the ice clump problem!

Is it the clump of ice that's connected to a mechanism? That's what you wrote. Melt the clump until the mechanism is free at last, free at last, thank god almighty, free at last. (MLK)

SOURCE: Vegetable and fruit crisper drawers freezing foods

I had the same problem. Apparently the problem is the main control board. According to the technician that came out to fix mine there is a design flaw and these boards are very sensitive and can blow a circuit or malfunction from the slightest power surge. What happens then is that the control board doesn't "tell" the fan to turn on and off at the right time so the fridge and freezer warm up too much before the fan kicks in and then it cools everything down but since the fan isn't running at the correct intervals and circulating the air all of the cold air settles to the bottom which causes the produce in the drawers to freeze while the top shelves get warmer. I had done a fair bit of research before calling GE and came to the conclusion that this was a common problem. So I pressed them and was able to get the fee for the part waived (before I made the service call appointment) which was around $150. The part now has a 5 year waranty which I find funny, because I'm not sure why it wouldn't have that upfront as my refridgerator is only 2 years old. Whatever!! Unfortunately, unless you have indepth knowledge of refridgerator repair there is no way around the service call and labor. Anyone buying a new model of refridgerator (any company) should consider an extended waranty. The service tech also told me that all refridgerators made after 2001 are required, by law, to have an electronic mother board which in all likelyhood will fail at somepoint prior to when you are ready to buy a new fridge!

Good Lucak!

The drawers will pull out the front, then you can unclip the drawer fronts, they are just held together by plastic tabs. GE Refrigerator Drawer WR32X10338

try pulling out the ice bucket, remove all ice and look for signs of damage on the auger mechanism... most of the time the ice tends to clump up and that prevents the auger from moving freely.

Hello azcowgirl19

Welcome to fixya,

You said, You have a GE Profile side/side refrigerator which was delivered on 4/19/08. When the ice comes down the chute it makes a lot of noise - so much noise that you cannot hear another person speak within the same room. Is there anyway that this clattering can be cushioned?
Also, the ice seems to clump up into a large ball and when it tries to go threw the coils, it shakes and rattles the entire appliance. Other than removing the lg clump of ice is there anyway to prevent this?

Yes I do recognize the problem.
The ice maker has a couple of defective parts in it!
Lucky for you you still have a warranty for this GE Profile fridge and did not waste anytime looking into it!
In the USA, Call GE at 1(800) GE CARES , and tell them the ice maker has multiple problems so they can service it while you still have your full parts and labor warranty!

Let me know how it goes!
Please remember to leave a rating at our site before you leave!
Thank You, Huuum
