Compressor click and buzz...on and off..

Hi,

I have read several posts related to this type of issues with Kenmore fridge compressor. Now, after owning the fridge for nearly 6 years, i started to hear the horrible clicking noise from my compressor...
I followed the easiest path on the repairing by putting a new starter relay after 4 hours of idling/power off.... Apparently, the solution did not work.
compressor kicks on.. click... buzz (abnormally high pitch) 10 secs...click (overload/over temp?)...

I have cleaned the coils and compressor area... I still have no luck.
I didn't have a multimeter. So I used my kill-a-meter outlet to measure the power and current draw from the fridge...
Without compressor...but evaporator fan is out... current reads 0.1A, 25 W...
After compressor click on... current is around 20A, 800W or higher...

I don't know what to do now? I assume it is a dead unit... freezer cools down to 40F only... what keeps it cool? the 10 sec humming during the starting period?
Should I try a 3 in 1 starter thing? I guess I can find that in the appliance part store... how much does it usually cost?

I don't know if I should invest more troubleshooting parts as I'm getting a new fridge going....

If its pulling more then what the label says on the compressor it sounds like its done kicked the bucket there as its pulling too much to try and turn itself over and run also replacing the cooling fan for it should help for the next one that gets installed on it you can try contacting Kenmore about it and they should help you with it

SOURCE: Refrigerator buzzes & clicks

The only thing a capacitor does is 'kick' the compressor to start it. There is a box on the compressor containing the start relay. If it is defective or dirty, it might buzz. With the power off, find it, remove its cover and use some canned air to blow off any dirt inside. If that doesn't fix it, replace it. If there is a fan down there, be careful...and be sure it is working.

My Kenmore 53632 side by side stopped cooling

no thats a good sign but unplug it,you'll find the model number on the right hand side near the top on the fridge side, get a start device no capacitor and that should take care of your problem.let it cool down a little so you can work on it,next time send the model number,i could have looked up your machine and gave you the part number, you can read out the compressor with a meter but most likely it will be the start device.my kenmore is 8 years and i just had to change my device,i went shopping and spent 600.00 dollars on food on a saturday, two days later i opened my bedroom door and there was a stink like something burnt,i've changed out a few devices so i know that smell,i was lucky i had the part in my van i didn't even loose my ice cream,ha ha.i hope you have the same luck,if i can help you with anything else let me know good luck

I have a Kenmore Coldspot m# 57282791. Last night, it stopped staying cold, and I have not heard the motor/compressor come on at all since then (the part that cools the fridge, right?) There is a small fan...

Hi,

If the compressor is not running, it could be either a bad relay or compressor. This is not an issue with defrost components or temp. control .If you have experience in repairing appliances, could take all precautions necessary and use multimeter - You could do a continuity check on compressor motor and all combination's. An infinity value on multimeter would confirm bad compressor.

On the side of the compressor you will see a box (maybe a cover) remove the cover if it has one and then remove the wire harness. next you will see the relay with the capacitor mounted to it. give the relay a tug and pull it off the side of the compressor. once you have it off pull the capacitor off and then give the relay a shake. If it rattles the relay is bad. if the relay does not rattle the compressor is bad and you will need to call a service guy to replace the compressor.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Compressor gone

Sorry, is not way you can do it by yourself. The compressor needs to be replaced by a certified technician (It holds gases at high pressures). I don't think will be a good idea to replace the compressor on a 9yrs old refrigerator. On the internet is a lot of complains about Sears technician "fixing" fridges with bad compressors. It's more likely it will break again.

Will be better to invest $700 on a new fridge.

Good luck !

The fridge is not cold enough

you might want to try and clean the condensing coils on the outside of the unit, located either behind or underneth, this will really hinder performance. Also there is a fan located near the compressor on some models, make sure this is working. And check the fans on the inside (good air flow).

REFRIGERATOR IS MAKING A BUZZING SOUND, not cooling

You have one of two problems going on. Your fan is spinning at hitting the sides. Or your compressor is shot which seems to be more the problem and even though it is cold the humming sound is a warning for you that the compressor is shot and it is more affordable to replace the fridge then the compressor. Sometimes compressor can cost more then the fridge.

Refrigerator not cold; freezer very cold and forming ice on back.

The refrigerator has a number for example 312.57894 located near bottom behind fresh food door. Look at following areas for the model number
  • Beneath Or Inside Food Compartment On Cabinet Frame
  • On Plate Lower Front Or Rear Of Cabinet
  • Beside Compressor Door On Right End
  • Near Rear Of Cabinet
  • Inside Liner At Top
  • Let me know what you find, Sea Breeze

Loud banging noise and water leaking

first of all the noise is the internal compressor motor hitting the steel shell on shut down. in my experience this is annoying and not really a huge concern as far as the compressor dying any time soon. now your drain problem. i would recomend the wire or heat probe that whirlpool recomends. when your freezer defrosts the water that drips off of the coil can and will flash2.gif freeze in the drain area causing it to freeze up a peice of 10 or 12 guage solid copper wire run into the drain and wrapped around your def heater will transfer enough heat into the drain hole to prevent it from freezing up.

fwiw: whirlpool in my opinion is probably one of the best appliances on the market
