The ballet bar is usually used for about fifteen minutes inthe beginning of each class because it is used for warm ups. Sometimes, it is used at the end of a classfor a few minutes so the dancers can stretch.

Is there a technique or proper way to hold on to a ballet bar?

You should never put too much weight on to the bar (do not use it as a way to support yourself). Your hand should rest very gently on the bar. Try resting your thumb on top of the bar with the rest of your fingers as opposed to underneath the bar causing you to have a tighter grip.
