Yes, there are quite a few things to take into consideration when buying your dog some new toys. Dogs can sometimes chew through their toys and ingest pieces that break off. Pieces of string and fabric can come loose and be easily ingested. Look for a toy that is durable, easy to handle, and safe. You should also try to avoid toys that are so small they can be swallowed.

TIPS ON BUYING DURABLE AND SAFE TOYS FOR YOUR DOG

There are hundreds of varieties of dog toys available for purchase and although many of them look cute and fun, they may not be safe for your dog. I am going to give you a few tips that will help ensure your dogs safety in regards to the types of toys you buy for him/her.

First and foremost, choose toys made for dogs. Sometimes people are drawn to toys sold for cats, hamsters or even children. These may be harmful to your dog. Make sure to buy pet specific toys from a well-known manufacturer of dog toys.

Look for toys made from either hard rubber or nylon. These materials are very safe for your dog and double as great teething tools. Here are a few examples of well manufactured dog toys -

Consider the size of your dog in regards to the size of the toy. Large dogs should not be given small toys. Your dog could accidentally swallow it and choke.

Some of the things to avoid when selecting a dog toy are: ribbons, bells or pieces of plastic. These small embellishments are often the first thing your dog will try to remove and will most likely ingest.

Features of dog toys you should look for

When buying a toy for your dog, there are different features you should look for:
Size of the toy- make sure the of the toy is designed for your dog's . Don't buy a toy too small for your dog because then it can swallow it.
Safety of the toy- dog toys have to be safe. Last thing you want is a fun experience turning into a dangerous experience. Before buying your dog a new boy, consult with the vet and read about the toy online to get more information.
Durability- Unless you're planning to switch up your dog toys every few days, you want toys that will last for a long time or at least until the dog will get bored from it.
Cleaning of the toy- some toys are easier to clean than other. For example, nylon and rubber toys are very easy to clean and can also be thrown into the dishwasher. On the other hand, stuffed animal toys don't always survive the washing machine and can get destroyed if they are made from low quality materials.

What do I need to consider when buying toys for my dog?

Buying toys for a dog may seem so simple; however there are many factors to consider. First look at your dog and consider the following aspects: age, size and physical capabilities. Next consider yourself - maybe you work from home and need a lot of time to focus. In that case you should buy your dog distraction toys such as food delivery toys, chew toys and puzzle toys.

The squeak has gone from my dog's favorite toy, can it be fixed?

It could be that the squeaky thing inside the toy has become dislodged or has a hole in it. Most of the toys are molded which means you would have to cut it open to replace the squeaky device. These toys are quite inexpensive so it might be worth your while to buy your dog a new one.
