Take the foot off the machine
Remove the needle plate
Remove the feed dogs
rotate by hand until the needle is at the lowest position
continue rotating until the needle rises 2 mm
the hook assembly should be passing exactly by the scarf of the needle
if not loosen the two screws that secure the the hook assembly and rotate the hook assembly by hand until it is exactly at the scarf of the needle and the distance between the hook and the scarf is .1 mm (almost touching the needle)
tightened the two screws, replace the feed dogs and foot and it should sew perfectly

I want to know what is scarf of the needle?. What is the hook assembly is that the blk plate that covers the metal bottom disc.?.

  • Bruce McCampbell Oct 08, 2012

The scarf is the indentation of the needle where the eye is located. As the needle rises, the tension of the thread in the fabric causes a small loop to form. As the hook passes the scarf of the needle, it catches the loop and the stitch is locked.

Check to see if your Riccar has a switch to drop the feed dogs. If it does return it to sewing mode.

I found a user manual but not a tech manual. Perhaps this will help some.

You might be in "Stopmatic" mode. Check if your pressure lifter bar is in the upper most position, if it is the machine is disengage and you are set to wind your bobbin. Lower it to the 3 o-clock position this will engage the machine and the needle will operate.

You may have a different weight thread in your bobbin and your need may be wrong for your project. Check your manual or call Pfaff.

How do I adjust the timing on a pfaff industrial 545?it will not pick up the bobbin thread at all.

This happened to me. Shucks, I had the wrong needle in; it was too short to reach the bobbin thread and pick it up. Installed correct needle (repair man did) and viola. . .
