You have a carburetor problem. Stuck float or clogged filter. Gas cannot get into the carb as fast as it is used. Letting it sit for a few minutes will allow the bowl to fill.

That won't solve my desire to have the transfer board hooked in, if no one is here to shut it off. It actually will start right up the 2nd time without waiting more than 5 to 10 seconds. If I'm not here, right now I can't have it tied into the transfer board, which is why I got the board to begin with. My ideal setup is for it to respond immediately whether I'm here or not.

Mine runs as long as the choke is closed. As soon as I open the choke, it dies. Carb was cleaned and fresh gas put in but still same.

This sounds like fuel restriction or debris in the carb float bowl. If the unit has a fuel filter change it. Remove the main fuel line to the carb and check fuel flow. It should be at a fair gravity rate from the fuel tank. If not.. check the fuel tank exit port and line from the bottom of the tank to any fuel shut offs or debris catch bowls. Clean any catch bowls.
If you have good fuel flow...... to the carb:
Remove the float bowl and clean out the debris. Use carb cleaner. While the main fuel line is removed shot carb cleaner UP into the float needle area to flush out the manifold and fuel passages. Locate the main fuel jet often in the threaded area of the bowl nut and clean that out also.
Reconnect main fuel line and install the float bowl. Check for fuel leaks BEFORE starting the unit.
This should get your unit going again. If not please respond with a model number so I can look up everything.

Hello
You may have a clogged main jet in the carburetor, remove the engine shroud to expose the carburetor, the carburetor will be held on in most cases by tow bolts and then a basket underneath, remove the carburetor and flip it over in a rag to catch the fuel, then remove the screws holding the fuel float bowl on, carefully work the bowl loose to avoid tearing the bowl gasket, if you do damage it you will need a carburetor repair kit. Once the float bowl is removed remove the floor and the needle valve at the fuel inlet, set them aside, using a can of spray carburetor cleaner spray the inside of the carb and then blow through the jets with compressed air to dislodge the dirt (this is a must) that is obstructing fuel flow and causing the lean stall out, reverse and reinstall you should be good to go.

Starts instantly. If moved or shut off manually, will not re-start. Very aggrevating. There must be a faulty safety switch. Where is this safety switch located? Please help!

There is a low oil level sensor on the opposite side of the engine as the oil fill / dipstick. The next time that your presure washer acts up disconnect ONE wire to the oil level sensor. On pressure washers mose engines have the oil level sensor removed for just this reason. You tip the engine to move the power washer and you can not start it or.. if you move it with the unit running the oil level sensor kills the ignition. Just make sure that anytime you are going to use it that you ensure the oil level is properly serviced. (Each use)

There is yet another possibility. Debris in the bottom of the fuel bowl will draft directly into the lower fuel jet (Located inthe bowl nut area) with a tip of the unit and clog the fuel nozzle. You can prove you have a fuel problem simply by adding gas to the carb throat with the air filter removed. If you get a brief start... you have a fuel not a spark problem. Turn off the fuel selector... remove the fuel float bowl nut and drop the float bowl. Use carb cleaner in the threaded area to clean out the orifice in the body of the carb and then remove the debris from the float bowl. CLEAN the bowl nut also.

Use a spray can lid for the next step under the float bowl area.
BRIEFLY
Open the fuel selector and gently lift the float to level. Fuel must shut off when near level and re-start fuel flow as you lower the float. The spray paint can lid should fill up in 8 seconds or less. If you have poor fuel flow start looking at the bottom of the gas tank or an inline fuel filter as the problem. Some fuel selectors have tiny bowls under the fuel selector lever. Make sure to clean this out also if you have one.

Turn off the fuel selector. Reinstall the float bowl making sure the rubber bowl gasket is fitted properly. Fuel selector ON... leak test. Then test start the unit and see if your symptom is gone.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

I note that your question was 3 months ago. I answered a current post today that had your exact same symptoms. Your post was revealed after I answered the current post. Had I seen your post 90 days ago I would have responded with the same answer as follows:

One more possibility. Your engine has and E-Z start valve that is supposed to be a compression relief. If this is sitcking / partially open ect.. it can make it hard to start your engine.

I really think you have a low oil level sensor issue that is grounding out the spark because it cycles to ground when you move the unit and is not... sensing the oil level properly after you move the unit. I clean oil level sensors with carb cleaner. You can wake up about 75% of them just by cleaning them off internally through the 2 side holes cleaning up to the contact area on the top of the sensor.

My snow blower will not start

Hi and wlecome to FixYa, I am Kelly. If you would please can I get your engine model number for future reference?

- Now as for your not starting issue speaking in general. Remove the loat bowl and clean out the debris.
- Take a narrow blade screw driver and remove the orifice in the carb throat where the bowl fastener threads are. It will rorate counter clockwise. Clean the hole in the orifice with a toothpick or a small piece of wire. (Try NOT to enlarge the hole!)
- Use carb cleaner in the threaded area of the carb venturi and spray it clean
- Remove the Air Filter and spray cab cleaner into all of the Brass tubing areas.
- Make sure the orifice is clean and reinstall the orifice

Check for fuel flow by turning on the fuel selector with the float bowl still removed. You should see fuel running into the float area. No fuel flow = tank / filter / fuel selector problem. Some of these engines have a catch bowl on the bottom of the fuel selector. If you have no fuel flow and your sure the tank port is clean check for a bowl under the fuel selector and clean that out.

Once your sure you have fuel flow... and you know your getting gas:
- Reinstall the float bowl making sure the bowl fastener is free of debris.
- Wait for the 20 seconds for the float bowl to fill up.
- Attempt start

STILL NO START:

You did not mention if there is spark present at the spark plug. If there is no spark check the engine oil level as there is an oil level sensor that will ground the spark if the oil level is too low.
Once your sure the engine is full of oil and you still have no spark:
For testing purposes only
- Disconnect ONE lead on the oil level sensor and check again for spark. If you at this point have spark the oil level sensor is bad or very dirty. You can remove it (CCW) and wash it with fuel knowing full well the fire dangers of doing so. i.e. not in the garage near any water heaters!
- Reinstall the oil level sensor and connect BOTH wires.
-Check Spark
Spark NO = replace oil level sensor
Spark yes = attempt start.

Carb and Spark OK still no start.... compression testing time. With the ignition off or grounded and the spark plug removed... use an old paint brush and form the end of the handle so that it will stay stuck in the hole but not past the threads in the head. Turn the engine through. The compression should force the brush out of the hole quickly. (Crude but it works!) i.e you have compression.. Hold the brush hard into the threaded area and listen for air flow backward through the carb (Bad)
Make sure you have no air flow out the exhauset during compression...

Still no compression... pour about 3 ounces of gas into the spark plug hole and gently pull the engine through... let is soak for 30 minutes. Then do a serious yank on the recoil. Clean off the gas mess... Pull the engine trough rapidly several more times to clear excess gas. Install the spark plug. (You were trying to rid the valve seats of any residual carbon that often holds a valve open just far enough so the engine loses compression)

COMPRESSION OK:

Start that rascal up! Ignition on, Fuel on. Key start if your battery is charged..

That is pretty much it without a model number.

Wish you the best and thanks for choosing FixYa,

Compression release stuck open? Do the plugs show spark? Is the slide in the carb moving up and down when you turn the throttle? Soak the carbs in denatured alcohol for 30 minutes, then clean them with spray carb cleaner. Remove the air screw and throttle screw on the carbs and spray into the holes. Reassemble and LIGHTLY seat the screws. Now open each one up one and one half turns. This is the factory setting. Install an in-line fuel filter to keep trash out of the carbs. Is the exhaust clear? Is the air filter clean? Some bikes have an oil level sensor > is the oil level in the gearbox where it should be?
