Question about Brother MFC 210C All-In-One InkJet Printer

Need to reset purge counter due to error 46

I received machine error 46 after doing too many cleaning cycles. The felt ink pads were saturated, so I opened up the printer and blotted up the excess. But I still can't get my printer to work until I reset the purge counter. Does anyone know the procedure and code? Many thanks for the help!

I had the same situation on an MFC-5840CN, followed your instructions and sure enough found a machine error 46. Now that I know what the problem is, I'll look for a service manual to see if I can fix it myself. Many many thanks for providing a valuable service.

I had the same problem with my MFC420-CN.  I was freaking out because I can't afford repairs and I had some important documents to copy and print. Fortunately, your solution worked!  THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!  You are a life-saver!

RE:machine error 46 (mfc210-c). I took apart and cleaned the ink box, re-assembled the printer and re-entered maintenance mode, all ready to reset the purge counter. In maintenance mode , I now show machine error A7 and I have not yet corrected error #46. Do I now have to correct two error codes, or did changing the ink box by itself correct error #46 without need to reset the purge counter. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

MFC-5440CN saved from the tip!
"Unable to Clean" message - found TrickyDicky's sltn 4 for various printers.
Went into maint mode as per sltn 4 - verified error 46.
"The user can establish the internal Machine Error Code as follows: pull the mains cable out of the machine (power off), hold down the Menu/Set key, re-insert the mains cable into the machine (power on). The internal Machine Error Code will be displayed."

Keyed in 80 - stepped through the items with "down" key and located Purge Counter.
"Press the 2, 7, 8, and 3 keys in this order to reset the purge count to zero
Press the Stop/Exit key to return to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.
Press the 9 key twice to return to the standby state."

This worked brilliantly - no need to tamper with any parts of the printer. Purge Counter reset did it all. Fully functional printer.

Thanks TrickyDicky for info on verifying the error code and purge reset

Here is the answer to the Machine Error 46 (have just fixed my own MFC210C): Machine Error 46 – Purged Ink Box Full MFC620CN/420CN/410CN/210C and FAX2440C The machine counts all purge (cleaning) operations in order to prevent the internal ink absorber box from overflowing with purged ink. An “initial purge”, for example, advances the purge counter by 187 + 420 = 607. When the purge counter approaches 6400, an internal "Machine Error 46" is generated. Further purge operations are prohibited, and therefore the printer becomes unuseable. When an internal Machine Error 46 is generated, the user will see an “Unable to Clean” external message and will be unable to use the printer. The “Unable to Clean” external message can relate to many different internal error codes however. The user can establish the internal Machine Error Code as follows: pull the mains cable out of the machine (power off), hold down the Menu/Set key, re-insert the mains cable into the machine (power on). The internal Machine Error Code will be displayed. If there is a Machine Error 46, it is necessary to dismantle the printer, replace the ink absorber box (or possibly break the ink absorber box open and clean its absorbent sponges under a tap), re-assemble the printer and reset the purge counter to zero. Resetting purge counter MFC620CN/420CN/410CN/210C and FAX2440C 1) Enter machine maintenance mode (on MFC210C all four photo/copy/fax/scan lights flash in maintenance mode). Care is needed in maintenance mode, otherwise critical settings may be inadvertently corrupted. FAX models with numerical keypads: Press the Menu/Set, *, 2, 8, 6 and 4 keys within two seconds. (if you fail to complete the correct key sequence within two seconds, press the Stop key to try again). Other (non-FAX) models: Press the Menu/Set and Black Start keys. Next press the “up arrow” key four times to enter the maintenance mode). 2) Press the 8 then 0 keys in the initial stage of the maintenance mode to call up the machine's log information list (function code 80). 3) Press the Black Start key several times to scroll through the log information list to reach the purge counter. The purge counter is the 25th item in the list. 4) Press the 2, 7, 8, and 3 keys in this order to reset the purge count to zero. 5) Press the Stop/Exit key to return to the initial stage of the maintenance mode. 6) Press the 9 key twice to return to the standby state. Carry on printing !!

I followed the procedure posted below (solution number 5 by trickydicky) for resetting the purge counter, and it did reset it to 0000. However, I still had error 46, "Unable to clean". So I also reset some of the other parameters in the log, such as "wipe", "flush", and the parameter that listed Error 46. Those are reset the same way as the purge parameter, by entering 2,7,8,3 when you see the parameter listed in the maintenance mode. This fixed the problem for me. I was ready to toss the printer, but glad I checked here.

As for the felt ink pads, I don't think it would even be necessary to replace or clean them, at least for quite awhile longer. There were still large areas of white that hadn't been saturated at all, even though I got this error message and have done a lot of printing. So apparently it's just an automatic error that is programmed to occur on the machine after a certain number of cleanings, whether or not the felt pads are saturated.

My printer sx400 says that waste ink is saturated what can i do without contacting my dealer

The waste ink absorbers are pads deep inside the unit. They absorb the ink during cleaning cycles and during edge to edge printing. You usually need to disassemble the printer from the top to reach them - have plenty of newspaper to absorb the ink as you do this. There may be screws holding the print head as well. (Since one is under where the print cartridge carrier is parked you have to get it out of the way.) Once you reach the foam rubber pads, pull them out and blot off most of the ink. Also blot the excess ink from the area where the pads sit. Then rinse out the excess ink under running water until the water becomes clear. Dry the pads well (you can use a hair dryer to speed the process). Then reassemble the printer. (Alternatively, you can order replacement pads from Epson Service.)

Next you need to reset the counter. Epson has a reset utility for some of their printers for US and Canada residents here: http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/InkPadsForm.jsp?cookies=no&com.broadvision.session.new=Yes . You enter your printer model and serial number to download the Windows utility. (You need to prove ownership of an Epson printer.) There are some alternative utilities that claim to be able to do the reset as well. I do not know if they are from trustworthy sources (but they can be found by google).

Do not do the reset without cleaning or replacing the pads. You risk having ink spread everywhere inside the printer and on your documents.

Note: the counter is designed to reach the limit when the printer is near the end-of-life for other parts as well under normal usage. You may find this unit will have additional failures soon.

I hope this helps.

Unable to Init. 46

Your Ink Absorber box is full. The machine cleans its print nozzles by blasting them out with ink; it collects that waste ink and pumps it into a plastic box filled with thick, felt pads. After a certain number of cleaning operations, it decides it's not safe to squirt more ink into the box and gives this Error 46. Replacing the ink absorber box and flushing box and resetting the purge counter is fairly complex. Maybe someone has instructions all typed out, but your best bet is probably to take it to a Brother tech.

My brother mfc 440cn read unable to clean error46

Its Ink Absorber Box is full. Inside the machine, in the back and hidden under the covers is a large plastic box with thick, felt pads packed in it. Every time the machine cleans its printheads, it squirts ink through all its nozzles, collects the mess, and pumps it into that box. After a few thousand cleaning operations, it decides the box is dangerously full of ink and throws up that Error 46.
Getting to the Ink Absorber Box (part number LP1270001) is fairly complex. I think it's time to ask a tech what he/she charges.

I have an epson photh R300. The ink and paper light blinks. i put all new ink in it and it says "printer parts at end of service life." It won't move or do anything after that all I can do is...

the printer's counter shuts the printer down after "x" number of prints, since the ink-pad is typically saturated with excess ink at that point. You won't have to take it to get serviced if you simply blot the excess ink from the ink-pads and reset ther counter. To reset the counter, download this program and install.

http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html or http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml remember to blot excess ink off the ink-pad, and then follow the instructions to reset the counter. Good luck!!! JohnsGroovyWebsite.com

u might need to get the unit serviced ,for that either contact HP customer care at 1800 474 6836 or on-site Repair Center at 800-633-3600.

Brother DCP 110C printer error

you cant clean the waistinktank because when the felt dries up it wont take up any ink anymore! The rejected ink will flow into machine and cause serious demages!

Anyway you have forgotten to reset the eeprom code to tell the machine thta the ink absorberbox has been CHANGED!

Search here for error 46

1 Answer

Error message parts need servicing

The error message you are getting is because the printer thinks you have gone through too many cleaning cycles and assumes the waste ink pads at the bottom of the printer are full. sometimes this is correct but not always. the only way to know for shure is to remove the cover and physically look inside at the waste ink pads. if they are saturated with ink you can do one of three things
1 remove pads and clean in water and dry (very messy)
2 get replacement pads (probably not economical)
3 take a chance and use utility (printer don't work anyway)
If waste ink pads are full and you leave them it may cause problems later when you run more cleaning cycles as the surplus ink now has nowhere to go.
hope this helps
