Question about Brother MFC-7820N Laser Printer
I too cannot get the BACK COVER OPEN message to GO AWAY. Misery loves company I suppose. It seems that this is a common problem without obvious solutions. Please, somebody, HELP US so that we can print again!
THANK-YOU Guest for #4. It works! And it seems like a miracle. It took me an hour of fumbling around with flashlight and reading glasses, but I was able to get my brother up and running again.
It's easiest if you remove the back cover completely. Putting it on the edge of a desk or table may make this easier. The door comes off on the left very easily. Just lift the top slotted arm off the peg and then the bottom left part comes off it's peg pretty easily.
Also the fuser cover comes down farther by pressing on the right blue plastic knob and gently pressing the right side of the fuser cover over it.
Then you can see the cylinder that #4 talks about. It lies horizontally in the middle of the fuser cover, about the size of a straw (smaller though). Mine was very obviously bowed and the little spine sticking up (about 1.5 inches long) was also obviously not aligned with a slot below it on the fuser cover.
By gently jiggling it, and particularly on the right side I jiggled it around very gently to push it to the right. (you can move it around a bit and get a feel for where it should be) It then seemed to settle in to the right better, the bowed tension was gone and the spine (or needle) fit right into the slot.
I gently put the fuser cover back up and closed the back door and my printer works.

Easy solution - once you open up the back cover, there is another smaller black cover that goes over the fuser - on the inside of this smaller cover is a spring loaded piece - this is the "back cover sensor" so to speak. Make sure this is aligned properly, if it doesn't rest in it's place you will forever get the back cover open message.

I went to brother typed in the error, it came up with a solution, it told me to pull out the ink cartridge, and sure enough there was anothe piece of paper I had missed in the jam, I pulled it out put the ink back in and it now works fine

I Had the Same Problem with a printer i got for free. I tried messing around with the back door sensor flag(spring loaded piece) but it seemed to be located correctly.
I believe the switch has dual purpose first to check for the back cover closed and to see when a paper has gone around the rollers. It would only give me the "back cover" error when a new paper was loaded and would go around the rollers. I would then remove this piece of paper and try again and it would give me the same error.
This lead me to believe that the sensor was working like it should and it could be a programming bug. I couldnt find a way to reset the printer so I took off the left side cover by removing one front and one back screw. (UNPLUG POWER OF COURSE) Then pulled each connector and plugged them back in. This seemed to reset the printer and now it works!!!!

I discovered that the long sensor rod was pushed out of place about 1/8" or 1/4" to the left. I noticed that there is a small tongue that fits in a slot about midway on the rod part, and it was misaligned. Once I pushed it to the right to align the toungue with the slot, it all worked again. Aargh, so frustrating.

See solution #1. A little bit more clarification:
The "spring loaded piece" mentioned is a black cylinder, about an eighth-inch in diameter, that runs about halfway across the black fuser cover mentioned. On it is a very slender spine. On the printer I looked at, the cylinder was noticeably bowed, and the spine was not fitting through the slots in a small metal shield in the fuser cover. Once I moved it so the spine aligned correctly, and closed everything up, the error went away.
