Question about LaCie Big Disk External USB 2.0 1TB Hard Drive
My LaCie Big Disk USB 1TB drive isn't working properly, and I'm wondering if all hope is lost. About half an hour ago, it would still mount on my MacBook Pro, but I just couldn't write any new data or read any of the stuff on it. I would get the spinning pinwheel, and then the drive would disappear, saying I removed it unproperly, even though it was still connected to the computer.
Now, however, it won't even mount anymore, and it's making this buzzing noise every few seconds.
Ugh... I have about 900mb of really important data on this (I'm a filmmaker and I use Final Cut Pro often), and I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to remedy the situation?
Thanks so much!
It does not sound good, the hard drive may be faulty or even the drive enclosure could be faulty.
Try thr following:-
1. Take the LaCie drive and connect it to another MAC, if it reads the drive, your in luck.
2. Dismantle the drive case and remove the hard drive and reconnect it again (a few times). The drive may need reseating to make proper electrical connection. Test it in your MAC.
3. The LaCie case could be faulty, remove the drive and insert it into another working LaCie drive case. Test it in your MAC.
4. If the hard drive is faulty, there are hard drive data recovery companies that can retrieve your data, but it will cost you an arm and a leg for their service.
In future I would not rely on a single device for backing up important data. You should get 2 LaCie drives or a dat tape drive plus a LaCie drive and/or burn the data on BlueRay disks.
You should also protect your computer and devices against lightning strikes, power outages/blackouts and power surges with an UPS (uninterruptable power supply), especially when you are editing, burning, copying/back up your data.

I had a very similar problem with my LaCie drive. It turned out that it was power related, and the problem was solved by replacing the AC adapter.
The drive was working fine, but one day stopped mounting. I tried it on other Mac machines, and Windows machines, but it would not mount. All the power lights came on, and I could hear the drives making some noise, but nothing happened when plugged in.
After a few tests, I noticed that the drives didn't sound 'right'. They made noise when turned on, but didn't sound like the platters were not spinning up. I held the drive in my hand the next time I turned in on, and noted that there was no notivable movement. The drives had power, but were not spinning up. In my mind, this meant they weren't getting enough power. I had the drive open at this point, so made sure there was no corrosion or damage around the AC port, which there wasn't. So I pointed my finder at the power supply, the AC acapter for the drive. I had another LaCie drive in the office, so I grabbed it's AC adapter and cord. I made sure that it have the same voltage configuration (check diagrams and spec printed on the adapters) and made sure I wasn't using an adapter with more current (Amps). I plugged it in, the drives spun up and mounted to the desktop on first attempt. I was so releived that I didn't lose the 1TB of data. It was actually a drive we used for transporting large volumes, and I hadn't yet backed up to our RAID. I assued it was damaged in commute, but didn't give up until diagnosing fully. I rarely use data though, and it's usually human error (accidental deletion or dropping the drive). Outside of that, problems are generally repairable, and data recoverable, without having to spend the big money. Be thorough, diligent and creative in your testing before declaring a loss.
