    hello,
    i have the same problem...
i can not boot from an external dvd-rom drive.
in windows, the drive is recognized, no problem, but i can't boot from it.
i tried all bios options: boot sequence, enableedit usb options, cd, dvdboot... nothing works.
if i plug the dvdrom in the usb drive it starts (blinking led,), but nothin else
    don't know what do to....

This didn't work as the only external CD is listed, not external DVD. Any other ideas?

    Thanks,
    PJ

I tried to change the system BIOS sertting but the listing specifically states "Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive". The BIOS Boot list does not include USB DVD drives. Is there another BIOS update for this PC?

    Thanks,
    PJ

When the pc in post usually on dells bios there is a boot menu option it is usually f12
if you don't know what your doing in the bios it is not a good place to test your skills after pressing F12 just choose cd rom for boot

Thanks for replying Jose! Pressing F-12 does allow the choice for the PC to boot from the internal CD Rom or an external USB CD Rom drive. Unfortunately, it does not recognize the external USB port DVD Drive. I believe that this BIOS simply will not recognize the USB DVD during the boot-up process. It does "see" it immediately after the Windows boot so perhaps the driver just doesn't load until Windows does.

HP DL160 g6 need to activate boot from DVD

Hi Fyamine,
While booting go into the BIOS, use either the dedicated keys or +/- to enable/disable the CD ROM boot ( in the Advanced section of device management), then go into the advanced boot tab and change the boot order (it should be CD->HDD->Pxe->Disabled by Default). After that, restart the server and wait for it to boot from the disk.

How to boot from a USB CD/DVD ROM MY System is Dell Optiplex 170L Thanking in advance

If you want to boot from a external cd/dvd rom here's what to do.
  1. Connect your USB CD/DVD ROM to your computer.
  2. After connecting, you must start from boot up. so Reboot your computer.
  3. You must go to your bios settings, so during boot, press DELETE or if it doesn't work reboot again and try F2.
  4. Now once on the bios settings, search for the boot device, or boot priority.
  5. You must make your USB CD/DVD ROM as First boot, or just place it at the top of the list.
  6. You can adjust the position by pressing (-)minus and (+)plus signs in your keyboard.
  7. Now once the USB CD/DVD ROM is at the top. press F10 to save the changes and click Yes.
  8. And that's it. Your PC will now boot from the USB CD/DVD ROM.
Goodluck, Hope my solution will help, Please give some feedback regarding my solution.

Thank you very much for using Fixya! Have a Great Day!

Well i just bought a dell optiplex gx620 (full tower) and im trying to install windows pro but every time i put the disk in the pc and turn it on it keeps saying that theres no bootable device...so i tryed...

From the info you supplied...

Boot (power off/on) and go into the BIOS (Usually hit F2 as it powers on and the white bar goes across the bottom for self test).
F2 will probably be listed as an option along the top (right). You only have a limited time to hit the key.

One of the menus should show what devices are connected (CD, hard drives). Make sure the system sees you're hard drive and CD-DVD. If the CD/DVD is not listed anywhere I would guess it is not installed correctly. I am not sure if the 620 will support an external USB C/DVD. This is another option and again, boot order would have to be changed.

Another menu has boot order. Make sure CD/DVD is at top of the list since you stated the drive is blank. I would make sure hard drive is second in the list. Save/Exit BIOS

Be CAREFUL MAKING any CHANGES to the BIOS.

How can i change first boot device cd rom to dvd rom

Hi,

To change your boot device you must change the setting in you BIOS.

To do this restart your computer and press delete repeatedly.
When you are in the BIOS search for Boot Priority within the different tabs.
To set you DVD Drive as the boot device make sure it replaces the CD Drive.
Set the DVD Drive as the first priority and your Hard drive as the second boot priority.
Save the settings and exit.

This will enable you to boot from your DVD Drive if a bootable disc is present in the drive.

Let me know if this solution was helpful!

Before reaching the login screen, my Acer netbook (1G and 160G harddrive) keeps shutting down. A blue screen appears with programming language on it for a brief second and the computer immediately...

What OS is your laptop.

If you have the correct OS CD / DVD, you should try and boot from this.

Inserting your disk and powering up the laptop it should automatically boot from the CD / DVD.

Follow the onscreen steps, then your should at some point be presented with a repair option.

If the laptop doesnt boot off the CD / DVD please select the relevant option when booting up to

enter the BIOS.

From the BIOS change the boot order to boot from CD-ROm 1st.

Let me know how you get on.

No compatibility problem in your case. XP should work well with Dell optiplex gx280. Try re-installing the OS, there is problem with the OS version you had used to install.Rate me if it is useful!!

My system is not giving option of booting from cd room

You can either change the boot order by going into the bios and setting the cd as the first option or by pressing F12 as the computer boots to bring up Dell's boot order menu.

I want to install the operating system in my pc, but don't know how to boot from cd-rom

When you start the PC, there will be a logo or something on screen, and there will be a text like: "Press Del to enter setup, press F8 for boot menu." The keys can differ, but thats about what it says. Press the key to enterte boot menu, then set your CD or DVD-rom drive at the first place in the list. Quit the setup, insert the disk, and wait. There will be a text like: "Pres Eter to boot from CD." Press Enter, and the installation will begin. I hope this answers yor question, Yannick.

Dell optiplex gx280 won't boot up

you either have the boot priority in the bios off or you have improperly cabled your hard drive . perhaps you set it to boot to cd while installing the operating system and forgot to change the order back.
The floppy drive does not have to be present for the system to boot (if set to "not installed" in bios)
your boot devices are your cd/dvd rom and your harddrive.
Seeing as you've recently replaced the power supply , ime assuming you didnt dismantle the whole computer , just the power leads coming from the power supply, which means you only moved power , not data cables.
This would be the first thing to check -- power to the harddrive and cd rom, the 4 pin connector that sometimes connects to the motherboard and any data cables you might have bumped while changing the power cables. check these things and post here again.
