SOURCE: Protect mode Kenwood KDC MP438U in dash reciever

Anytime there is a short circuit or your battery down low enough you will recieve this signal. If you press the little "reset button" using a small pin or screwdriver your unit should reboot without the "PROTECT" signal. If seeing this "PROTECT" sign is a result of jumping your car, this will fix it. If the signal persists, then there is still a short circuit and you need to check your connection with the battery. Most likely it is touching the chasis or some othere metal.

My Kenwood KDC-252U radio just started flashing protect on the screen.

Usually, when you see "Protect", the audio system has detected a short in the wiring. You'll have to check for loose or broken wires and missing insulation on wires that are touching anything else in the vehicle. Check all of the speaker leads from the wiring harness to the speakers.

If you can't find any wiring issues, press the reset button behind the faceplate. To take the faceplate off, press in on the upper left corner and then pull the left side away from the dash. Use a pen point or an unfolded paper clip to press the recessed button. It's below the CD slot a bit left of the center of the main unit.

If the "Protect" message continues, your CD-receiver requires service at a service center.

I hope this helps. You can see a picture of the location of the reset button on page 4 of the manual. You can find a copy of the manual from Kenwood support here: http://www.kenwood.com/cs/ce/index.php?model=KDC-252U&lang=index . What does protect mode mean

If the radio is in protect it usually means you have a short or ground in the speakers or speaker wires. Sometimes you can reset the radio and it will go away. If all of your speakers and speaker wires check out and it remains in protect after resetting (you can reset it either by pressing the reset button if there is one {it should be a pencil tip sized depression somewhere on the face or a small hole with a switch behind it on the subpanel behind the face, or by disconnecting power to the radio.} then you more than likely have a bad output ic.

Locate the smart/learn button on the rear of the motor unit near where all those white wires go. Press and immediately release this and then walk over to the keypad and key in any 4 digit code you like and press enter.

Error message on screen will not go away

Hello bigdsketch,

The "DCER" error is caused by one of the speaker wires shorted or grounded or a shorted voice coil. Remove the speaker wiring one at a time to determine which one is causing the error, then repair or replace the defective part.

You may need to press the reset button (small recessed button to the lower right of the volume control) after the problem is corrected.

Hope this helps.

The protection function is activated when the speaker wire has a short-circuit or touches the chassis of the vehicle. Wire or insulate the speaker cable properly and press the reset button. (The reset button is that little pinhole button below and to the right of the volume control). If you do this and the "PROTECT" code doesn't disappear, you'll have to consult a service center. Further, if you had this professionally installed, they should be obligated to fix the issue for you (hopefully).

Reset the remote control?

I have the same amp. Try leaving the batteries our for a while like more than a day. Also if you can join a wire from each battery terminal to the others for a while. That will short out the remote and 0 it. This should cure your problem. I have had to redo the remote many times. Also while the remote is out press all the buttons in as many as your can for a while.
