Blank Screens and Bad Moods

Ok...so I ordered a cheapo computer for the kids to goof on but wanted to make sure it had at least some kind of graphics card so they could play simple games. I ordered this one. HP Compaq dc7800 Desktop PC - Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33GHz, 2GB DDR2, 160GB HDD, DVD-ROM, NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS VC, Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit Here is the issue. Pulled the comp out of the box and plugged it in. GREAT! no display but powered on. Good job guys no drivers installed. Pulled out the card computer boots up fine. Go to get the drivers and uh oh...card must be installed for it Nvidia to recognize it and install. Here's the issue....How do I install the drivers for this card when i cannot see a display with it in my computer?

If the PC boots without the video card, then it has an onboard card. Try checking BIOS and make sure display is set to onboard card. It is a good chance the drivers are already loaded. Even if they are not you should default display settings, Like 256 colors and 800x600 resolution.

2GB RAM should be about $100, the same for installation. Your current graphics card meets the specs you provided. An upgraded video card will be about $200 for one that will work, $300 for one that will work well.

SOURCE: nvidia geforce 9400gt 1gb card problem

The maximum performance of your video card is limited by the hardware you attach it to. In the display properties of Windows, your highest resolution is 1280x1024 because your monitor is not able to go any higher than this. This resolution is a typical maximum for a 17" monitor. Some 15" can do this, and some 19" can do this. In order to get a higher resolution, you'll need to get a bigger monitor with a higher native resolution. For example, a nice 24" monitor can only do 1920x1200. The video card can go higher, but it's limited by the monitor. 32bit color is your highest setting - that's 16 million colors. Your video card's 1GB of RAM only determines how much rendered data (usually 3D) it can store and move at any given moment, which is related to but not determined by your screen resolution. That's a very nice card - you should be able to get very good frame rates, color, and performance out of 32bit color and 1280x1024. If you want a higher resolution, you'll need to get a bigger monitor.

SOURCE: I want some information about Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT 1GB DDR 2

If you are using Dual Core the mother board you are using may have PCI Express Slot. So that you may install Graphics card. Only for particular lower end mother board doesn't have this feature. Any way tell me your motherboard make and model no. e.g., Intel DG31PR, 945GNT, DG41TY etc.,

I bought 4gb Ram aditional to reach a top 8gb Ram for my ASUS M2N-E Sli and since then i experienced some problems, like Blue Screens, blackouts when i Scroll on my Firefox or some black rectangules...

i just looked at the specs of your motherboard it will support 2 graphics cards are/do you have both working or using only one you might need to check and make sure they are securely seated or remove the card/s and make sure the socket/s are clean and dust free the blue screens has me concerned
Support two identical NVIDIA SLI-Ready graphics cards (both at x8 mode)
ASUS two-slot thermal design

If your computer came with a motherboard disc the drivers could be on it

Click start control panel administrive tools computer management device manager scroll to display adapters + to expand you might see a yellow question mark ? or exclamation mark ! or a red x right click select reinstall drivers
Want to make sure your drivers are in place and no errors have occurred? Simply click start right click on my computer select properties then select device manager scroll to Display Adapters and click on the small "+" you should see the model of your PCI Express graphic card there. If there is a problem with it, a yellow exclamation mark should appear besides it. If you don't see it everything is OK and your card is working properly.

How can i run 4 monitors to put out one total screeen.. ok lets say i take 4 montiors and put like two 15" monitors and stack them with antoher 2 under it so its a box of 4 .. 2 screens wide by two...

In order to do this, hardware wise, you would need 4 monitors and enough graphic ports to support them.
Older graphics cards may only have two graphic ports which means you would need to have 2 videos card installed on your machine in order to get 4 displays going.
On some of the new graphics cards, you can get as many as 8 ports on the same card meaning you could drive 8 displays with one cards.
Once you've got the right hardware, you can either use the manufacturer's software (ATI or nVidia most likely) to configure your monitors to run as one desktop or you can try using Windows built-in display settings. The key is you want to extend your desktop onto all the monitors and to tell your computer which screen you want where.
If you need any more help with that, let me know.

Display shows only half screen. Other half is ok. The bad side is just vertical bars top-to-bottom. Thanks, Jim

This indicates a bad LCD screen, Hook a external monitor to the video output on the back of the laptop, If okay! the display on the computer is bad and will need to be replaced, "costly" Now! if both screens show the same problem, it is the Video Graphics Card that is apart of the motherboard that is the issue, It will need a computer technician to address this.

This is definitely a failure in your graphics chip. The graphics needs to be reflowed in order for it to function again. Effective fixes are either a new motherboard, or repair existing one. Good company: www.revivemylaptop.com. They can give free advice and fantastic prices I find

How do I do about resetting the bios to see if my monitor issue is the graphics card that is causing the problem?

Hey Hi Mary,

Well if your system has an EXPANSION GRAPHIC CARD then in order to find out if the GRAPHIC CARD has gone bad u actually need to remove it from the system then hook up the monitor in the INTEGRATED VIDEO PORT. If the monitor works well and good then its the GRAPHIC CARD which has gone bad.

Because until the GRAPHIC CARD is installed in the system the system by default keep ignoring the INTEGRATED GRAPHIC CARD it will not even detect whether the system has an INTEGRATED GRAPHIC CARD or not..

Kindly Reply Back If You Need Any Help..

I found a link to the service manual kindly submitted by another poster here, there is some potentially helpful ideas there to fix problems like these: http://www.feedroller.com/Store/Service%20Manual/HL-1230,%20HL-1440,%20HL-1450,%20HL-1470N%20Parts%20and%20Service%20Manual.pdf

Check out p.165 and onwards. If you are like me, the easy service points like cleaning the corona wire and wiping the scanner window that you are supposed to do between toner changes never gets done as long as things work ok. Maybe you already checked that but if not, this could help.

Good luck!

Graphics cards on laptops cannot be changed or upgraded. In order to do this, I believe you have to change out the screen, because graphics cards in laptops are within the screens.
