SMATSMAN is right, though not giving any instructions on how to do it. I will give you instructions for MS Word and Windows Picture & Fax Viewer, what you need to click on will vary from program to program in terms of the button's name.

In Word the button you need to click on is labelled as Properties. In Pic & Fax Viewer it is labelled as Printing Preferences. Ok now onto the instructions for these 2 programs. I am assume you know how to insert pictures from file in Word? If you don't I will put that step in, if you do just skip it and go to the step regarding the printing of the pic.

Word - Click on Insert, Picture then From File and browse for the picture you want to pring in B&W. Once the pic is added press CTRL+P for the Print dialog box and click on Properties.

This will open up the Printer's Properties window, click on the Color tab and click in the tick box next to Print in greyscale on the left hand side. You will now have 3 options to choose from:

1. High quality

2. Black print cartridge only

3. Optimize for photocopy or fax

From what you are asking I would recommend choosing the 2nd option and print with the black cartridge only. Click Ok to apply it to the pic you want to print out and then click on Ok again to print out the pic.

Now on to Windows Picture & Fax Viewer:

Double click the actual file and then press CTRL+P or click on the printer icon down the bottom. This loads the Photo Printing Wizard that will guide you through what pics you want to print and allow you to change whether it is greyscale or full color.

Click Next and choose the pic or pics you wish to print out, click Next and it will then allow you to choose what printer you want to print to (usually only on networked PCs in companies/etc), once you have chosen the printer click on Printing Preferences.

Then click on the Color tab and select Print in greyscale and choose the 2nd option again and click Ok.Clicking Next will now bring up what layout you want it to be printed as, click Next and it will print the pic out for you. Once you are done click on Finish.

Hope this helps you out tankbrain

Black and white prints are not black

Sorry, steve, that you are experiencing this problem.

According to canon.com's website regarding the i9900 InkJet Photo Printer:

Why color ink may be used when printing in black and white Even when printing in black and white, color ink is used for the following reasons:
  1. Automatic cleaning of the print head.

To prevent the print head nozzles from clogging, the print head is automatically cleaned periodically. At that time, a small amount of each color ink is consumed.

Therefore, although printing in black and white is performed, color ink is also consumed.

  2. Color inks may be used to create black.

When printing in grayscale or on photo paper or when duplex printing, although printing appears in black and white, the color black may be created using the three (cyan, magenta, and yellow) color inks. Printers without a pigment black tank / cartridge will print black / grayscale will create a composite black using color ink even on plain paper.

Therefore, although printing in black and white is performed, color ink may be consumed.
  3. In order to keep the heavy black ink from smearing on the page or in the printer, color ink is used when duplex printing to help create black text.

    ---
I might suggest taking out the color ink cartridges leaving only black there, but some printers don't take kindly to this. So, you may have to further experiment with magenta, cyan, and yellow to make it at least seem b&w to your best eye's judgment.

Good luck on this.

How do I print black and white with an Office Jet 6500? I'd like the option to print in black and white and not color.

Usually that option is either on the print setup when you go to print something or you would have to do it manually.

If you can't figure it out you could always print it, if it's in color then just copy it in black and white.

I just got a hp photosmart c4480 printer and it makes black and white copies, but I can't figure out how to print in black and white like when I am on a web site.

OK, Whe you select Print from the File Menu and the Print window opens, selct the Color tab.

There should be an option to Print in Grayscale. Check the box beside it and click OK at the bottom. Then back at the Print window, click Print.

(Note: If this option is not on the Color tab, or you do not have a color tab, look on the Advanced tab for the same thing.)

Need additional help...use the Comment link.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Dell Photo 944 won't print black and white

I had the same problem and just figured it out! On your control panel, choose printer and then Properties. Go to Printing Preferences and click on the Advanced tab. Under this tab is a button for More Options and then a section Complete-A-Print. I had to uncheck "use color cartridge for all black printing" and then check "use black cartridge to print in black and white." Then I had the option back to print in black and white. I have a Dell Photo 964 but I'm assuming the options should be the same. Hope this helps someone!

How do I install an ink cartridge? HP photosmart c5280 All in one

To replace the print cartridges Perform the following steps to replace the print cartridges:
  1. Make sure the HP All-in-One is on. CAUTION: If the HP All-in-One is off when you open the print cartridge door to access the print cartridges, the HP All-in-One will not release the cartridges for changing. The HP All-in-One can get damaged if the print cartridges are not docked safely when trying to remove them.
  2. Open the print cartridge door. The print carriage moves to the far right side of the HP All-in-One. Figure 1: Opening the print cartridge door c00956268.gif
  3. Wait until the print carriage is idle and silent, and then lightly press down on a print cartridge to release it. If replacing the tri-color print cartridge, remove the print cartridge from the slot on the left. Figure 2: Removing the print cartridge from the slot c00956269.gif 1 - Tri-color print cartridge slot 2 - Black and photo print cartridges slot
  4. Pull the print cartridge toward you out of its slot.
NOTE: Remove the black print cartridge to install the photo or gray photo print cartridge, and store the black print cartridge in the print cartridge protector or an airtight plastic container.
  5. Remove the new print cartridge from its packaging, and carefully remove the black plastic tape by using the pink pull tab Figure 3: Removing the new print cartridge from its packaging c00956270.gif 1 - Copper-colored contacts 2 - Plastic tape with pink pull tab (must be removed before installing) 3 - Ink nozzles under tape CAUTION: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or ink nozzles. Also, do not re-tape the print cartridges. Doing so can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. Figure 4: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts c00956271.gif
  6. Hold the print cartridge with the HP logo on top, and insert the new print cartridge into the empty cartridge slot. Make sure to push the print cartridge firmly until it snaps into place. If installing the tri-color print cartridge, slide it into the left slot. If installing a black, photo, or gray photo print cartridge, slide it into the right slot. Figure 5: Installing the print cartridge c00956272.gif
  7. Close the print cartridge door. Figure 6: Closing the print cartridge door. c00956273.gif HP All-in-One prints a print cartridge alignment page if a new print cartridge is installed.
  8. When prompted, ensure plain white paper is loaded in the input tray, and then press OK .
  9. The HP All-in-One prints a test page, aligns the print head, and calibrates the printer. Recycle or discard the page. A success or failure message appears.
NOTE: If colored paper is loaded in the input tray when aligning the print cartridges, the alignment will fail. Load unused plain white paper into the input tray, and then try the alignment again. If the alignment fails again, you might have a defective sensor or print cartridge. Contact HP Support at www.hp.com/support If prompted, choose your country/region, and then click Contact HP technical support.
  10. Press OK to continue.
