The splitter you bought allows you to split one video signal into two. For example, a teacher using a computer to teach a class. She has one computer, one monitor she can see and then the splitter allows the students to see what she sees. To display independent screens you'll need to add another card to your system. Microsoft Help and Support lays out how to do this with Win 2000. No splitter involved.

Using the splitter i can not get windows 7 to recognize the other monitor and enable multiple monitors

Hello there,
As you've said you're using a display splitter, the result will be identical screen on both monitors. splitters main function is to split VGA signals into N of outputs. where N=number of outputs. no matter how many monitors you attach to your splitter, the windows only recognize monitors attached directly to your video card. Windows requires a video card that has two or more output VGA or DVI outputs to get second extended monitor or display link device.
If you're video card has two outputs follow the instruction below.
1. plug the VGA or DVI other cable on the unused port. 2. power on the second monitor. 3. right click on the desktop, click screen resolution.

4. click the display in gray, Multiple Displays: it depends on the user.
pcsyke_69.jpg
5. I selected extended display. 6. apply and ok.
pcsyke_70.jpg

This spreads your desktop over both monitors and lets you drag items between the two screens. This is how most people use two monitors, and it's the default setting for desktop computers. you can use your mouse to grab the title bar (the top portion) of a window and drag it to your new display.

Hopefully this information is helpful. Thank you for using FixYa..

We are trying to set up a dual monitor system so that we cn watch movies via the pc [not laptop] we have plugged in all the cables but still zilch

if you want to set up a dual tv monitor system using via pc as a source you will need a VGA splitter usually 2 or more output. now how are you going to connect the 2 monitor and PC to the VGA splitter. first make sure your tv monitor is supported by service input for PC unit. then prepare the accessories needed. the VGA splitter and VGA cable. vinceisaac_30.jpg vinceisaac_31.jpg sample image for VGA splitter VGA cable or connector how are you going to hook up the splitter and VGA cable to the tv monitor and PC
  • you need 3 vga connector and 1 splitter to connect a dual monitor system.
  • connect one end of the vga connector to the pc unit and the other end to the input port of splitter.
  • now the 2 remaining vga connector connect to the output of splitter either of the port, then the 2 end wire you must connect to the input port ( pc service port ) of the 2 tv monitor. make sure you set up the right input either with the remote or at the tv unit to recognized the pc source.
  • you almost done the connections now at this point plug the tv monitors, plug the dc adapter supply of the vga splitter and lastly turn on the pc unit to view movies. i hope it will help you just ask me if you have further questions thanks for choosing the fixya.

I am trying to install dual monitors to my computer. I have no idea how to do it. Can someone provide me with a step by step detailed walkthrough on how to preform this task. Thank you.

If this has 1 or 2 video cards, install the software for them it will go through reboots. To set up the extended monitor via Windows 9X, 2k, XP: R click on the desktop, select properties, select settings, and choose extend on to monitor 1 or 2 via the picture. Scroll through the resolution size. Click Apply to set it or cancel. If this is Vista or Windows 7 it appear different. Right click on Desktop, go to screen resolution, Highlight which monitor to extend, select Multiple displays, Extend these displays, pick resolution and hit apply.

If only 1 video card you will need a Y splitter VGA cable to hook up both VGA cables to the 1 card or 1 card with 2 VGA cable ports. After cables are hooked up go through same setup process above.

A display splitter will only mirror the screens, you cannot extend the desktop via a splitter.

Most portables cannot support dual monitors without a docking station.

Dual monitors show identical instead of independent display info. Any suggestions?

Right click any empty space on the desk top to bring up display properties. Select the "Settings" tab. Click on the "Advance" button. Select the monitor tab. You should see an icon representing each monitor. You have to click on one icon or the other to see a check box to allow you extend your desktop from one monitor to the other.

Dual monitors can't extend desktop

Connecting Two Monitors
Use the cable adapter to connect a VGA monitor and a DVI monitor to the DVI-I connector on the back panel.

When you connect two monitors, the video driver will detect this connection and activate the multimonitor functionality.
This is the only way to enable extended display. If you use a standard splitter and connect two DVI montors, the display will only be mirrored.
