I assume you are doing free motion quilting? Use the V Menu, choose the first stitch. If you are using the Q Sensor foot or the spring free motion foot, go into the Set menu, hit "More" twice then turn On for either the Q Foot or Free motion. Make sure you have Needle Down turned on (top right-hand button on the left side above the needle). You might need to loosen the top tension by one or two clicks - first screen of the Set menu, under the picture that looks like DNA. A Size 90 needle is probably best and if the quilt is difficult to move about you might like to either use the Sewing Advisor to set for Heavy fabric or lessen the upper presser foot pressure - Set menu once again, next picture after the DNA. I have never had to do this with my D1 but I know some other people have. Get back if things are not working well for you.

I can not remember how to set my Viking Designer 1 for free motion sewing

Drop the feed dogs and install a darning or free motion presser foot. Be sure to use a brand new needle. The stitch width should be set on zero. The stitch length really doesn't matter since you will be manipulating the material manually.

Then you will need to test on a scrap sandwich block made up of your fabric and batting to adjust the tension. Tension is appropriate when the upper and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the sandwich without any thread looping or pulling.

You may be able to find a manual by asking your local Viking dealer or search the internet for:

Hi, Free motion quilting is done with your programmed quilting stitches, Lower the feed dogs using the small white dial on the front of the machine behind the accessory tray, pick from one of the quilting stitches. they do make a free motion quilting tool ( I think they call it a hoop), but it just sets on top the material and helps you guide your material thru the machine. Hope this helps

My husqvarna designer 1 keypad doesnt work

It could be the Touch Screen. If it is a Designer 1. If it is a Designer II or Quilt Designer or #1 it could be the Dcard. Recommend it be checked by an Authorized Viking Dealer. You can find the nearest dealer from the Viking website - http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/us Click on the link Locate a Dealer.

I am having trouble with the free motion on my Viking SE. I can feel the thread sticking up on the back and the top thread keeps breaking. I have tried changing thread (four times) and changing needle...

I presume you have set the machine for free motion quilting in the Menu? There are so many things that could be causing this, and so many variables for tweaking it to optimum performance. What foot are you using? What thread? What needle? What menu setting? Have you tried loosening the top thread tension? Bobbin tension? I will keep a lookout for further posts from you with a bit more info that we can start working on. I have a Designer1, not the SE, but have used an Se so will try my best to help.

Just bought a brand new Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0 and the top thread keeps getting shredded and breaking while doing free motion quilting. I've checked threading diagrams, changed to four different...

this is a known issue with the pfaff.....i have just bought the machine and it has thread uptake issues...thread tension issues and it comes unthreaded by itself often...leaving globs of thread on the bottom stuck in the feed dogs and under the throat plate.....then the stitches are not properly balanced because the tension gets too loose on the bobbin thread....very disappointed to find out it is a known issue with all the viking husqvarna made machines...which are pfaff, janome and viking.....sux.

Viking Lily - free motion quilting - thread loops on underside.

I need more info.
>Where is your presser fooot pressure set(1-9) it should be around 4?
>How fast are you free motioning (faster is better? from 1-10 10 being full speed.
>Is your bobbin threaded correctly (I need to cover the basics.)?
>Never never use a needle smaller than a 90/14 for free motion (I know everyone's an expert...but trust me)
After all this, it's OK to tighten your tension up on top a little when free motioning and getting eyelashes/spider webs on bottom. around 6 should do it though.

Free motion quilting Viking Designer 1

I had the same dissatisfaction when I switched from the 1+ to the Designer 1. After some trials I am now happy. You need the springy free motion foot. Part #413 03 76-45. You take off the white shank and screw it on with the metal bar over the needle hook. In the set menu turn the SensorQ on, the free motion on, select stitch 1 from menu V and drop the feed dogs. It also makes a big difference to use the straight stitch throat plate which just has a small hole for the needle to go through. One other hint is that I often have to reduce my needle tension 3 or 4 steps. Hope it works for you.
