I'm trying to replace the starter on my 1997 chevrolet s10 4.3l v6, I noticed there were wedges from old one...but I can't figure out how to position them when trying to install them with my new starter.

Those thing's your calling wedges , how thick are they ? I know GM use's shims in some vehicle's , could these be what there are ? Do they look like these ? Without them you could ruin the flex plate or the starter gear .

I changed the starter and went to try it, now the truck starts but the starter doesnt disengage. i kill the engine and the starter wants to keep it going for a few seconds. i tried again and same thing....

You may need to add shims to increase pinion gear to ring gear clearance !
Inspect the flywheel ring gear for damage or unusual wear.

?€¢
Shim the starter if applicable.

?€¢
In order to add pinion to ring gear clearance a full size shim must be used. Do not shim only 1 starter mounting bolt. There are 3 shims available in different shapes (for clearance). All are 1 mm (0.039 in) thick.

When you took off the old starter did you see any thin strips of metal ?

Smoking starter

when mounting a chevy starter you must shim it down so it wont lock up when the bendix hits the flywheel..if it binds up it will burn up..there are different thicknesses of shims that fit between the block and the starter nose cone..use one or a combination of these to shim down enough that it wont drag..shim too far and it will spin out..I have owned chevys for years and have yet to see one that did not need shimmed down..these shims fit over the mounting bolts on the starter..

I INSTALLED ASTARTER IN 92 CHEV PU WORKS OK BUT AT FIRST GET GRINDING GEAR NOISE.

Sometimes the starter needs a shim installed to help this problem. If there was not a grinding noise with old starter you should be able to install a shim, these shims you can get at your auto parts store. they come in several thicknesses, most times you get 2 or 3 different thicknesses in a pack. Start with the thinner one and loosen the two starter bolts 3 to 4 turns then remove bolt furthest from engine , shim will slide in and slot at end should stradle bolt, align hole at other end and install other bolt and retighten bolts. test starter for noise,if noise is gone your done, if not try next thicker shim till noise is gone sometimes damage to the teeth on the flywheel can cause this noise but try the shims first. Good Luck!

90 blazer, starter problems, grinding at flywheel, tried, new bolts, shims, and new starter, how often do you have to use 1/2 shims?

inspect fly wheel good could have bad ring gear. check torque convertor bolts they are tigth. with starter bolted up NO SHIMS push out pinion gear and check clearance at flywheel teeth . you can use a feeler gauge (ROUND DIAMETER) measure clearance between top of flywheel ring gear tooth & bottom tooth of pinion tooth on starter clearance should be 0.01-0.06inchs. can ge shim in different gauges. DONT USE MORE THAN 2 SHIMS. some times you have to shim them but not often most of the time if use shims have a flywheel issue.

How to remove a starter from a 1999 chevy silverado 4x4 pickup

1) Disconnect Negative Cable on Battery
2) Starters on right-side Close to Trans. Bell Housing
3) Remove the 2-Starter Bolts and Shim if it's
if it has shims.
4) Remove the wires off Solenoid: Mark Them:
5) Remove the Heat Gaurd Over top of Starter:
6) Take Starter on Out.

To Re-Install Reverse the Procedure that you Removed the Starter. NOTE: the Shims if there was any are only nessary if the Casting of the Starter is not Exactly or Close to The Original.

Be sure that All the Wires you Took off the Starter Solenoid are put Back on the Exact Same Terminal. And Snug them up .Be careful not to Over Tighten,:
Specs on Bolts Are :
Torque Starter Battery Cable Nut to 90 inch lbs
Torque Smaller ingnition wier nuts to 18 Inch Lbs
Torque the 2- Starter Mounting Bolts to 35 FOOT lbs.
Remember if your Old Starter Had Shims the New one MIGHT need Shims. All Starters Casting are just a Little Different. like by thousands of an inch. So if you have problems you might have to remove or add shims, they come in different sizes. Hope this has helped you,Please let me know how this solution Helped. Thank You: From d_hubbs
