SOURCE: black line down right margin
Have you tried a new toner and drum unit? if not please do so. If that doesn't work then it is a scanner lamp failure and will need replacing.
You can fix it but trying to obtain this part for such an old machine will be hard. Don't know the part number sorry.

SOURCE: Black line
Black lines are caused by the scanner failing. Grey or light areas are either the ****-glass under the drum unit or the drum unit itself. If you use aftermarket toner, that could be your problem. Brother is really touchy when it comes to supplies.

look to the side of your big glass and you'll see a piece of glass about 1.5" wide. thats the galss that is used for scanning from the feeder. theres got to be something on that glass. possibly white-out or even a small speck of toner can cause that. look closely.

happened to me after i fed a page with not-too-hard whiteout on it. the feeder makes the page run through a different piece of glass and i just had to clean it.
