This machine has two blades for the drum, so when the second blade is not set right the background appears. So with change of the charge roller or the transfer belt and the transfer belt blade you will not fix the problem. Only way to fix the problem is to replace the second drum blade and to be careful when you are setting it. to be more precise you need to release the two spring on the back of the drum case and then insert the drum into the drum case after that attach the two springs that you had remove before.

I like to reply to the post entered by "ericeverhart".
You have right that the drum cleaning blade make strikes or lines when is bad, but this type of machine have two blades and when the second smaller blade is not set good than the copy have background like the developer or drum is wasted. I like to say this to you as advice because this had happened to me. also you are right that if the developer is not the correct one, or if all service executes are not done will cause background, but this type of machine generate background if the second drum blade is not set correctly Greeting

Swan this model doesnt have a transfer roller its a transfer belt and even if the trasfer belt is damage the problem it would cause is that the back of the paper would be dirty.

try adjusting the development bias adjusment in the tech mode. thats clear( yellow) then press 1, 0, 7, the press and hold clear/stop button(red) for 5 secs. then go to the copier then drum look for the devt bais adjustment, also look for the charge bias adjustment. try adjusting both.
if you lower the value for the devt bias the copy would be darker on the other hand if you lower the value of the charge it would be lighter

Clr modes, 1, 0, 7 clr stop 3 sec. enter system(copy) sp go to 2805 and execute. then go to 2801 and execute. then go to 3001-1 and execute. also verify that the developer you put in your machine is ricoh part number b296-9640 im not sure what the other part number would be if there are any. any incorrect developer would cause backgrounding. the drum blade would cause streaking or lines, the transfer belt causes lines and smudges on the back sides of your copies.

The specific procedure was not followed during installation therefore you're screwed. Make sure all sp procedures are followed, missing one will cause the copies to be gritty

Check copy life of consumables like Developer and Drum if ghost image might be Cleaning Blade found Imagaing Unit or Upper Fuser at Fusing Unit. If replace the whole imaging unit can solve your problem but individual parts try to clean first imaging include charge roller before you replace drum, cleaning blade and developer. mostly we replace developer only.

Why toner spills ?

when toner spills it could be that the seal between toner tray/harper/ hopper is not working properly, it could also be developer inside the drum that is worn down, if you page/print has a slight grey background then replace the developer, you will need a qualified technician for this as there is settings that need to be done after developer replacement

My Ricoh aficio 1515 printing and copying with background

If background is appearing on your copies, the problem is most likely the photoconductor unit (PCU) which houses both the drum and the developer. It comes as one piece, and you can easily remove the old one and slide the new one in.

The PCU is located to the right of the toner bottle, and the new PCU will come with instructions for replacement, but it is a simple procedure.

If you don't have a local dealer or supplier, you can purchase a PCU online just about anywhere that sells copier toner.

It's probably happening because the cleaning blade on the drum needs to be changed or replaced.

Developer....

When developer goes bad you use more toner for one thing, but the main sign is a gray background in your copy. The print should be black but appears to be gray. The ricoh 350/450 was always noted to leak toner and developer as it runs. Check your machine and see if you see any small piles of toner, which also has developer in it, in the machine. Ther are small seals made of felt that need to be replaced if you have this problem. These seals rub against the drum sides....Good luck.
