Question about Motorola Radio Communications
Height and placement of the antenna determines the range of the radio. By holding the radio upright, perpendicular to the earth, you would get the most range possible from the radio. When you are in problematic areas move yourself to higher elevation and face the direction you are wanting to transmit. This will give you the best opportunity to reach the other radio.

It is a radio designed for short range use, no matter the claims. It is low power and the antenna is not replaceable. To increase range, you and the receiving radio must be line of sight. No legal or really practical way to increase range on something that is at it's full limit. You could try a passive antenna mod: tape coax cable to the existing antenna and this leads to a magnetic mount. The magnetic mount MUST have a Uhf mobile radio antenna, nothing else. Put the magnet on a car or other metal surface as high as possible. Keep the coax lead under 10 feet. Will it work? Slightly better or not at all. Buy a better radio from a radio shop, NOT ONLINE is my best advice. If you try this, please post if it worked.

The FCC is not a reference number. Please post the model from the front sticker, or the back of the radio.
