Question about Generac Electrical Supplies

2 Answers

I have Generac GP8000E (G0069310) and the engine runs great but generates only 2-3 volts.

This is a BRUSHED EXCITATION generator with a voltage regulator. When I received the generator the voltage regulator was missing, so I replaced it. I get 2-3 volts when using a meter directly connected to the voltage regulator or alternator. The fuses on both the GFCI outlets will not reset. The 208-volt outlet has 2-3 volts. Do I need to flash the generator? If so how do you flash a brushed generator? Thanks.

Most of the time it is the AVR that has blown. Check out our videos on how to test them.

85 volts represents residual voltage. It is possible that your unit sat for an extended period and lost it's magnetism or the excitation system failed under load. check your manual for a procedure to "flash the field". If that is not successful, e-mail me and I'll tell you how to trouble shoot the failure.

SOURCE: mitsubishi mgb 4000 wiring diagram

Here is a manual for a newer mge model. I don't think your going to find a manual on the older mgb around and they tend to be very similar from one model to another so it should help. Though you should be able to get parts.

http://www.mitsubishi-generators.com/pdf/540811+NM%20Products+MGE1801-2901-4000-4800-5800-6700.pdf

As for the gfci brand, I have not had any problems with any of the brands out there. So the cheapest is the best. The 30amp socket could be 110 or 220vac. If there is a selector switch on your machine. If not, there should be a NEMA number on the face of the socket (ie 15-5R). The R stands for receptical while a P stands for plug.

Here is a plug configuratio diagram that will help identify your plug and the voltage it puts out. These are standard so you can be sure that if it the same plug it will put out the same power. Be carefull to ensure which side is larger or has a tab is correct.

http://www.frentzandsons.com/Hardware%20References/plugandreceptacleconfiguratio.htm

While replacing the plug just swap wire for wire in the same place as your new plug. Gold connector to gold and silver to silver.

The inside of a small generator is very similar and if this don't help I can walk you through any connections you have questions on. Pictures would help if it comes to this.

SOURCE: ENGINE RUNS BUT NO POWER TO OUTLETS

When you flash the field, are you going + 12 volts to the top or right side brush? Negative to the other brush? Try three times for 2 seconds?

Low voltage out 79.2 volts

Randy, connect up your volt meter and try manually reving up the engine. Even a few hundred RPM can make a big difference in the generator output.

If that resolves the problem, then you need to adjust the high speed settings on the motor.

Coleman powermate generator runs with no power

If we assume for the moment, that the internals of the generator are all ok. This problem is usually caused by not running the unit on load for a long time, a year for instance. During this time the residual magnetism in the field coils will slowly decay. When the unit is running the field coils control the power generated by the main windings. The higher the excitation voltage in the field coils, the higher the voltage generated by the main windings. The field coils are controlled by their magnets which, once a voltage has been generated, they will then self excite themselves.
However, if all of the magnetism has decayed then the field coils cannot generated because they have no excitation to start them off.
What you need to do is to find the field coil windings and while the unit is running with a load plugged in to it, you need to flash a voltage across the field coils.this will excite the field coils, part of that is used to do whats called self-excitation, honest...it is.
If you do this then a 12 volt car battery is a sensible thing to use for a power supply. But, as soon as the field coils start to self-excite then that voltage will increase far beyond 12 vo9lts. That is why you need a good size load connected, As the unit starts to generate then that load will alert you to remove the temporary supply, if you leave it connected the battery acid would rapidly boil and it can split the battery cases. That is why it's called 'flashing' it up. Once generating it wants leaving for a good hour,
If that does not produce results then the fault is deeper and requires testing by a qualified engineer.

Generac 5500XL, model#09778-7 no output. Changed the power regulator board. No luck. Flashed the 120 plug with 12-30vdc from DC board. Nothing. Excited the brushes directly with DC board. Only got 2.36VDC...

Double check your brush istallation. positive side toward rotor bearing, if you put 12 vdc directly into brush pack and check with a meter at the 120 vac outlet and have low or no voltage, you may have no resistance in your rotor slip rings, excitor & main windings also need a resistance check. 12.6-16.7 ohms (rotor) 2.26-2.80 ohms (excitation) .26-.32/.28-.35 main or power windings. Note: unit running when appling 12 volts to brush pack. 2-5 second only, ( This test tells you the rotor & stotor are ok )

My generator starts and runs great, It is not

  1. Check for any blown fuse and replace. It can be traced directly from the output lines.
  2. Check field excitation. The field excitation is supplied by the battery to the excitation coil through a pair of carbon brushes. If the brushes are worn out, no excitation field is supplied and no output is generated. Replace carbon brush if found worn-out.
  3. Use an analog multitester to check the continuity of the carbon brush and the field coil.

if you dont have the field excitation then you'll never get any AC no matter how your motor runs..field excitation comes in two types..one is by pole magnets and two is by field coils connected to a battery..

No power output from my generac 5000 power plus.

sounds like you need to "flash the field". This means you've lost you excitation voltage for the generator to produce electricity. In most cases you need to get a 9volt battery and connect it to 2 & 6 inside the generator. They are Blue & Red wires, but they are not the only blue & red ones there. The generator should be running and the battery should only be connected for about 5 seconds. This is very dangerous because of all the high voltage and democrats.

20KW Guardian Generac does not produce 12 volts to run engine

The problem is that the printed circuit board inside the generator draws a little current from the battery even when the generator is not running. Over the course of a few days this can make the battery weak enough to be unable to get recharged by the built in running charger which results in not enough power to run the electronic governor on the generator. Usually the spark plugs will work even with a fairly low battery.

Most of the Generac generators come with a built in trickle charger that runs off of the transfer switch load terminals. If your built in charger isn't doing the job it's either broken or you have the wrong sort of battery installed in the generator.

Regards,
Carl
