This problem may require you to uninstall the drivers once again. Restart the computer with the printer disconnected. After boot up is complete, plug in the usb printer cable and turn on the printer. Make sure cartridges and paper are loaded properly.
Have the CD that came with the printer in the drive, but don't let it run the Auto install feature. We will use it later should XP not be able to load its own driver for the Canon printer.
Should XP detect the printer, it will attempt to load its own default driver. Watch for the bubble messages at the bottom right of the screen. At some point it may not get the proper driver installed. You then have the option to select "Have driver from disk..." Point Windows XP to the driver disk that came with the printer. Opening the disk contents should show a folder somewhere with XP as a label. Browse to it and have XP install the driver software located in it.
You should now have a functioning printer.
Good luck and let me know if this works for you.
