Can't get a TV Signal on my Proton DVD Recorder.

My Protron DVD Recorder, PD-DVR100! I am trying to hook up my DVD Recorder to my Directv HD DVR recorder or my tv, but I don't know how. I had it hook up with the regular box with Directv and it works, but when I tryed to hook it up to my HD Box, I am no getting a tv signal. I use the HMdi cable and the red, white and yellow cable, also the red, blue and green cable, And I still can't get a signal on Tuner, Video 1, 2, and 3. I am also using the RF in and out cables. Can some one please help me. Because if this problem can't be fix I will have to leave Directv. I had Dishnetwork and it worked just fine.

  • ejack726 Oct 13, 2009

    The Direct tv HD DVR box does not have a out. It has a second in. Your saying hook up from the wall to the in on the directv box and for the out of that put it in to the DVD recorder. Please can you explain. I have tried it that way I am still not getting a tv signal.

    It would work only if my dvd recorder came with a hdmi cable. so is there a diagram using RF cable and the red, white and yellow cable, or S, video. if you can help me I would really appreicate it. I have JVC 42" Model LT42-789, and a Protron DVD Recorder PD-DVR-100, and Direct TV HD DVR box. If you can get a diagram from each of these item you can see that The Direct TV only have 2 Satalites (in) and not (out).

  • ejack726 Oct 13, 2009

    My TV has it, and my DVD Recorder has it, but the Direct TV doesn't...

  • ejack726 Oct 13, 2009

    The first diagram is very close. But the thing is on the HD Cable of Satilite boxes, there is only one In RF Cable, And that is the (In) the second is an (IN) there are no outs...

    Here is the Direct TV HD DVR Reciever, Look at the photo and then look at the diagram you sent me with the satalite receiver.

  • ejack726 Oct 14, 2009

    check the Bestbuy website and actual see the hd dvr box.

  • ejack726 Oct 14, 2009

    I wish that you could have seen the Direct Tv HD DVR box in the back of it. Then you could tell me. Direct Tv said that I could not be done, they made it like that because of some FCC Rule. But thanks any way, I really appreciate all of your input. I really do. Now I upset because I can't record movies or just regular tv, On my New HD TV. But again thanks so much for your help, I have been up for two days trying to get this. I guess, I'll have to put it back on one of the regular boxes.

  • ejack726 Oct 14, 2009

    The Direct TV box, does not look like that. It does have an in and out on the side of the diagram, and it doesn't have and out on it. It has two In.

  • ejack726 Oct 15, 2009

    You Are The MAN! After Direct TV themselves said that it could not be done. You did it. There are no words to express how I feel right now. I just want to say Thank you, Thank you, and Thank you. After 4 Days of working on this, I could now say that it is Finished.....Now I can record the things that I want to take off of my DVR on to a DVD. Again, You Are The MAN!....

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, the basic connection would be output to feed the input.

Offhand, to retain the digital quality/reception of DirecTV, connect the DirecTV HD DVR Box's HDMI port to the INPUT 1 HDMI of the JVC LT-42P789 using a HDMI cable for viewing purposes only. Channel selection is done on the DirecTV HD DVR Box while the JVC must be set to V1 by pressing the INPUT button on the side panel a couple of times to cycle through the other choices or alternately, V1 on the remote control. Confirm reception by viewing a DirecTV channel.

Additionally, to make the Protron PD-DVR100 viewable on the JVC TV, connect the Y/G, Pb/B & Pr/R VIDEO OUT at the rear of the Protron using green, blue & red RCA to RCA cables to the COMPONENT INPUT 5 of the JVC marked Y, Pb & Pr. For the audio, connect red & white RCA to RCA from FR & FL AUDIO OUT of the Protron to the L AUDIO R of INPUT 5 of the JVC. Test by loading and playing a known good DVD movie on the Protron. The JVC TV must be set to V5 by pressing the INPUT button on the side panel a couple of times tocycle through the other choices or alternately, V5 on the remotecontrol. Confirm reception by viewing the DVD movie.

To be able to record the DirecTV channels to the Protron, connect either V1 or V2 VIDEO OUT of the DirecTV HD DVR Box using a yellow RCA to RCA cable to either IN 1 or IN 2 VIDEO / SOURCE INPUT of the PD-DVR100. Further connect a pair of red & white RCA to RCA from either the L1 & R1 or L2 & R2 AUDIO OUT of the DirecTV HD DVR Box to the R-AUDIO-L of either IN1 or IN2 SOURCE INPUT of the Protron. To test:

  • set JVC to V5 and watch a known good DVD movie;
  • stop & eject the DVD movie and replace with an appropriate blank disc;
  • press the INPUT button on the remote of the Protron a couple of times to cycle through the available choices of AV1, AV2, AV3, DV or disc. Choice would either be AV1 or AV2;
  • use the DirecTV's remote and change channels;
  • DirectTV 's changing channels should be displayed on the JVC;
  • pressing Record on the Protron should initiate recording process.

There are a few more settings and configurations that could be done on the Protron (SpectronIQ) PD-DVR100 such as setting the audio to 2 channels only not 5.1 (Analog Audio Output) and General Sub menu to set the Video Output Format. These are all better explained in the user's manual linked here.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

    Appreciate your postback.

    I did check the link you provided and below is the image of the rear of the DirecTV HD DVR Box.

    Below is the image of the rear of the Protron PD-DVR100.

    Recording of HD materials using HDMI connection might pose copyright issues but the connection I proposed was SD using composite which under normal circumstances would allow recording. Have you tried the initially proposed connections?

    That image was from the link that you posted:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?...

    Clicking on the "More images" would display the "Back"

    which was then used to to come up with the connection scheme.

    The above was for model HR22, what model do you have?

Click the link directly to check the connectionshttp://www.funai-corp.com/support/setup.aspx?prod=dvd2tv2vcr --------------- What if my TV lacks A/V inputs?

If your TV lacks audio / visual (A/V) jacks, you will need to purchase an RF Modulator. RF Modulators are relatively inexpensive components which have both A/V and coaxial inputs outputs, which will allow you to connect to the Game System using A/V cables and to the TV using a coaxial cable. RF Modulators may be found anywhere home electronics are sold.
------------ This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution if helped.thank you for using fixya.

Hootk up the wire from the wall into the IN on the Dirert TV box, then from the out, of that go inot the inn of the dvr recorder, then from the Out of the dvr box go into the in of the tv.. doesnt matter what wires u use, as long as u match up the colors and do what i said for the inns and out,, once u do that check the input is on the correct one ( tuner video 1,2,3)
then amke sure the tv is on channel 3 or 4.

    your dvd recorder should have

    • Rear Panel Features:

    • RF antenna in/out

    • Two (2) S-Video, composite, L/R audio inputs

    • FR/C/SR audio out

    • FL/SW/SL audio out

    • S-video, composite video out

    • Y/G, Pb/B, Pr/R component video out

    • Digital coaxial and optical audio out
    your Direct tv box has
    (may not be your actual box precisely but it should look similar.)

    Y/G, Pb/B, Pr/R component video out

    • Digital coaxial and optical audio out
    Run, your cable form the wall into the satalight in, to the back of the dish box, from the RF out, of the dish box run it into the RF antenna in of the DVR, then run it from the RF out of the dvr into the tv. You dont need to hook up any other wires ect. Also make sure your tv is on channel 3 and 4, and u ahve power on all devices.

    what are the outs on the back of the dish box?

    It shouldn't matter to much. if your using a RF cable tye red, yellow, or white, cables or the other ones. as long as your going from OUTS of the box into INS of the dvr.. Then the same from the dvr box (out) into the (in) of the tv.

    on the back of the tv, or front where ever you decide to hook it, just make sure it says in. Near that section it should also say what video source your plugging into. Just make sure your tv is on that video source, then turn it to channel 3 or 4.

    Norman Oct 14, 2009

    Ok, form the wall to your dish box, screw the wire into the satalight in box. Using a S-Video put it in the s-video slot, (if u only got 1 its an out, if u got 2, read to see witch one is out and witch one is in).. but Run the s-video from the box to the IN s-video on the back of yoru dvr.. Now from the dish box, hook the white, and red cables, (make sure thier next to each other in a row and marked out). Run those into the in of your dvr. Now from your dvr you ran run a cable from the RF atenna out and screw it right into the back of your tv.

    Make sure you have it on the correct video input channel, all device are on, and your tv set to channel 3.

Timer problem

How we solved the problem was to go buy another DVD Recorder. The Proton has a couple of problems; i.e., it was suggested by one of your community members that the Proton was flaky.
Flaky is a perfect word for it. Anyway, we could never trust it. Not in the two or three years we have had it. Hope this new one is better. Did enjoy your website, though, and it was nice to read comments from other who have the Proton and to discover that we were not the only ones experiencing the problems.

Picture is black and white

If you have it connected to the 'antenna input' on your TV, change the channel up or down, and then back to 3/4 as appropriate. Sometimes the signal from the machine does not match exactly what the TV is looking for, but the TV will figure it out after you change the channel up or down. The AFC (automatic frequency control) will then try to re-tune the channel.
If you have it connected using the composite, and r/w audio, then you likely have a problem inside the DVR.
