Garmin Forerunner 305 USB Not Recognized

I have manually attempted to install the Garmin Forerunner 305 drivers on several levels (using the drivers from the website, directly from the CD, exported to my own hardrive). None of these efforts have succeeded. I have restarted the computer, restarted the Garmin, uninstalled all software at least twice.. and still the Garmin is not recognized. What else am I missing? I can only assume the drivers that came on the included CD are the correct drivers I know I am using the appropriate cable. I know for certain I did not switch it out with another device's cable - it still has the Garmin sticker on it. I am ensuring the device is on when I plug it into the USB port.... There must be SOMETHING else!

I have the same problem - Garmin 305 no longer recognised. I cleaned the points, changed the cable, changed the USB, changed the computer, I performed a soft reset and a hard reset. I deleted all the software and reloaded it and still won't see the Garmin attached. I contacted Garmin and they sent me a list of program codes to delete within the upgrade- something to do with maps. I'm not confident to do this and am manually recording data onto a spreadsheet.

Cleaning the gold contacts on the watch with a pencil eraser fixed it for me.

Hi,

It is well worth checking to make sure the contacts on the watch and cradle are not dirty. Clean them with a bit of spirits. I had the same problem as you and this is what solved - this after installing drivers, resetting the watch, blaming Vista, all to no avail.

I have had this problem of "USB device not recognised" with just the Garmin cable plugged in by itself. I am now using a Sony video USB cable without error messages.

SOURCE: Garmin GPSMap 60 CSx USB Connection

Actually, I just solved the problem myself...

I went to Garmin's driver download site (http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=591) and got the latest USB driver (2.2.1) for the 60C. (Although, it appears that that driver pertains to all Garmin products, not just the GPSmap series or the 60C.) Installation instructions are pretty much standard for Windows drivers, so it's easy.

That: a) Garmin requires special USB drivers for their product is finicky (most USB-connectable products just connect automatically using Windows' generic USB driver), and b) my unit -- which had always worked just fine, and suddenly stopped connecting out of the blue -- remains a mystery. Nonetheless, a driver upgrade was the final step that I needed. (Although, I also swapped USB cables and upgraded MapSource, too, so maybe it's some combination of those things.)

SOURCE: Garmin Forerunner 305 usb cable won't be read

The problem is probably not with the USB cable if the GPS wont even turn on. The older firmware of the Forerunner 205 and 305 have a problem with locking up. This causes the Forerunner to look completely dead. There is a reset procedure: push the mode and reset button at the same time and then let go and hit the power on button. If it powers on that is the problem. Go to the Garmin site and load the newest rev. of firmware into the Forerunner. Fixed mine and a few friends with the same problem.

I do however have a cable problem. Sometimes my PC will come up with unrecognized USB device and my 305 wont talk to the PC, it does charge. It is the cable or dock for sure, because I have tried a different cable/dock and the 305 has no problem. This is the reason I ended up here. I hope the lock fix works for those with the above problem.

SOURCE: THE USB PORT THAT MY GARMIN NUVI 270 IS PLUGGED IN TO IS NOT RECOGNIZED BY MY COMPUTER

If they don't give you a new one under warranty, are third party Garmin repair services that will fix it for cheap. Also, I found an DYI GPS repair guide,so you can do it yourself too, not that difficult to solder in a new USB port.

Loss of sound garmin forerunner 305 gps

This is a pretty common problem due to a design flaw in the 305 (although Garmin disagrees). There are open holes on the back of the watch for the speaker which allow sweat to corrode the speaker or material such as sunscreen to block the sound. You can attempt to clear these holes if they're blocked, but it's unlikely to help.
If your watch is still under warranty, call Garmin. As soon as you tell them about the loss of sound, they will arrange for you to exchange your watch for a refurbished one. When you receive your refurb, place tape over the holes to keep the gunk out (doesn't really impact the sound level).

Forerunner 305 "problem receiving activities"

I've had this problem. First -- and this sounds weird -- use a USB port on the back of your computer. Do NOT use a "secondary" type of USB port, such as an add-on hub, the ports on the front of a desktop machine, ports built into peripherals like a monitor, etc. Apparently, all USB ports are not created equal. Second, make sure you've the freshest Garmin Communicator plugin (which may entail a fresh download/install).

I have bought a new computer, windows 7. I cannot install driver for forerunner 305.

Glad to HELP YOU!

It's a well-known issue between Windows 7 and Garmin Forerunner.
Garmin company says it's a compatibility issue concerning the USB connection between the computer and the device and usually they recommend to be an Intel Chipset.
Try to download and install using the latest drivers available on their site on WIN 7 and Forerunner 305.m You have them ALL here and the USB driver was released this year and it's the last one on that list.

GOOD LUCK!

I reinstalled the driver of my garmin forerunner 205 but it is still not recognized by my computer. it has been working for over a year but now I do not get any connection and the device is not recognized...

Hello,

When you connect the unit to the cradle is there any reaction from the unit? I would try using a different USB port and cord first if this dosent fix your problem the next step would be to obtain a new cradle for your unit. They can be purchased here http://www.gpscity.ca/garmin-forerunner-205-305-charging-cradle.html.

Hope this helps!

My new computer running Win 7 will not recognize my Forerunner 305; I have installed and reinstalled training Center, drivers etc. and it still wont work. The USB connection is good because I can hear it...

Did you install from the CD or did you install the latest drivers (dated Dec 2009)? http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=591 has the latest USB driver. Other software updates are at http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00467-00

The newer drivers are Win7 compatible. Next, do you plug it into the computer or a hub? Try a direct connection. Also look at the contacts on the device and the cable. If there are any dark spots try cleaning the oxidation with a pencil eraser or another non-abrasive material (toothpaste for example).

What version firmware does the software report? If you see 0.0, try reinstalling the firmware https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/downloadsAgree.jsp?id=3289&product=010-00467-00&cID=142&pID=349 . Download the software, then run it (click run a second time if the UAC comes up). Then connect the Forerunner to the computer. You'll need to allow extra time for a satellite fix the next time you use the device.

I hope this helps.
