Question about Brother DCP-8020 Laser Printer
Hi everyone. I've found some good advice here for diagnosing a broken left hinge on a Brother, for which I am grateful. I am afraid that I now have another problem ...
I had ordered a new hinge and was waiting for it to arrive. I had been able to bypass the error message by applying gentle pressure on the left rear of the machine, so I was making copies. While putting down the cover, it literally just made this crazy popping sound out of nowhere.
My new hinge arrived today, but now I think the plastic piece which the metal post goes into has broken. (It looks that way). Co-worker is coming over with new hinge soon. Haven't looked at the replacement part yet. Will I need an additional part? If so, what's it called?
I went to Brother site and opened support.
searched for parts and got a listing of technical support shops in my area. called the first one listed and asked if they had the LP2403001 hinge in stock and they came back with an affirmative answer. will pick it up this afternoon locally.
You can see an image of the hinge assembly at ebay if you search for LP2403001.

Yep. Look up "LP2403001 hinge" and you get the MFC-8440 part. The MFC-8420 part is number LE8731001. Obviously, it is the same thing, just different numbers. *sigh*. I hope current models have a better hinge.

I, too, have had the plastic hinge-axis bearings break on my brother MFC 8420 so that I could no longer use the document feeder without holding the document feeder lid down, as described in an earlier post. My eventual "fix" is a mere hack.--I just removed the springs on the left hinge, so gravitity holds the lid in place and auto feeding works again without having to hold the lid down. I can still lift the lid to make flatbed copies or scans, but it is not quite as convenient as before the cheap plastic hinge axis bearings broke. But it cost me no money.
