Question about Vinotheque Whisperkool 4200 Wine Cooling Unit (Max Room Size = 1000 cu ft)

1 Answer

A layer of ice forms on the unit. Checked & replaced thermostat

But it did not fix the problem. Manual says to add refrigerant.
Most appliance people nor HVAC repairmen do not want to mess with it.. But for the Whisperkool 4200 - what kind of refrigerant and where can you get it ? Also, how do you get it recharged ?

I had a reputable service technician add (crimp) a valve onto an internal coil so refrigerant could be added. This is not difficult, however, it does not fix any leaks you might have.

The refrigerant used in my unit was R134A.

Here's the deal. unless you have a license to purchase freon you can't. Most likely the unit contains r-22 freon unless it was made before I think 1987 if made before then it is more than likely r-12. The reason appliance techs do not want to do this is because of the intensive set up in orderto access the system to add freon. they have to weld connections to access the freon and in such small areas it can be a massive pain. I would contact Whisper cool and see if they have any service centers in the area where you can take the machine for repairs.

Good luck hope this helped

ICE FORMS IN FREEZER BOTTOM,

Keep the bottom of your freezer free from ice. ... The water from the melted ice and frost drains through a short tube and into a pan beneath the refrigerator, where it evaporates. Should the drain line become clogged, the water has nowhere to go and it freezes, forming a layer of ice in the bottom of your freezer.

Ice forming on the back wall of refrigerator compartment It is a side by side...twenty years old

Hello there,

When you are experiencing ice build up in your refrigerator and a part of the refrigerator is not getting cold, either the fridge or freezer compartment. Then it means there is a problem with a part in the unit.

Investigate these three areas if frost and ice are forming in your freezer and your fridge is not cold enough, test Defrost Timer, Defrost Heater and the defrost thermostat when you detect where the problem is from, replace it.

Before you begin to test your defrost thermostat, defrost heater and defrost timer, make sure you disconnect the appliance's power supply.
Here are some tips for you to go through in order to solve the problem.

If there is no cooling at all on the fridge section but the freezer works then it is confirmed that the compressor and gas pressure is OK. Now shut off the fridge and leave it powered off while you clean and check the evaporator for frost. If frost is seen it is a good indication as the compressor is working with sufficient gas within.
Now after about 6 hours plug in the fridge to start. Observe cooling to happen in about one hour and ice to from under three hours.
Earlier make sure that the thermostat was set to normal mode for freezer and fridge.
However if ice forms in the freezer then observe the fridge for about 24 hours for cooling to continue and the fridge to cut off . If not the auto defrost timer, or the thermostat must be checked. Frost formation without defrosting could block the air flow and so shut the air passage to the fridge. Also the blower fan must work and if this is not working then the fan can be faulty. Also a fault on the control unit is a suspect to non functioning of any one of these components.
If defrost timer works but frost keeps forming check while the compressor shuts if the heaters are working, check continuity of the heaters.
So try this test using a multi-meter on the defrost timer and the thermostat and make your observations so that we come to the solution.

Ice build up

Check that the door is closing properly otherwise the freezer will be working overtime to cool and ice will form. If the door seal is good, it is possible that the thermostat needs to be checked.
