Question about Samsung RB215LASH

2 Answers

I've had my samsung bottom freezer counter depth fridge for just over a year and in the last 5 to 6 months it's started to periodically make a very loud humming noise. Should I be concerned that there is something wrong with my appliance?

The freezer compartment fan may have Icing or the motor is going.....Remove the trays and remove the rear cover. The fan and Freezer evaporator are behind that cover.
The fan doesn't run all the time.

If you have an ice maker it too can make buzzing sounds. Just turn off the Ice maker to eliminate it as a source.

Have your temperatures been affected in ANY way? have you had to adjust control settings at all? Noticed anything else unusual, water anywhere, difference in running times? Check around the unit, sometimes something that has slipped between fridge and counter is what is making the noise, or something on top of the fridge, like a cookie jar or a radio, could be making the noise. I once had a customer who's wall mounted air purifier, above the refrigerator no less, was making a crackling noise cuz it needed to be cleaned. Lastly, check your owners manual, it will often tell you that you may hear different noises than you were used to, and it may have made this noise from day one, but perhaps somebody pointed it out to you, and now thats all you hear.

New Refrigerator and Refrigerator Depth

When buying a new refrigerator many people like the look of a built-in refrigerator but find that they are very expensive and will require extensive remodeling to make them work for their kitchen. The answer becomes the counter depth refrigerator. These refrigerators depth can vary in the depth between 23 and 27 inches. This will keep the front of the refrigerator back about six inches more than a normal refrigerator which often run between 30 to 34 inches in depth. While the front of the counter depth refrigerator may still have to stick out beyond the cabinets so that the door can be opened, it does not require that it stick out way beyond the cabinets, as many normal depth refrigerators do.

The configuration of many counter depth refrigerators is the double side by side door model with a freezer the full length on one side and the fridge on the other side. They also come with the freezer in a drawer on the bottom and a double door fridge on the top.
Because of the depth limitation many of the counter depth refrigerators are wider and/ or taller then the standard depth models. This gives the room for the refrigerator cu ft or refrigerator cubic feet (internal size or capacity) to be larger with less depth. If you are considering one of these models, make sure that you measure the space available to make sure that you can fit the refrigerator into the hole that you have for it.

The price of the counter depth refrigerator will also be a bit more then the standard depth refrigerator. While this cost may be more, they are still much less then a true built-in refrigerator. If you check you can also find counter depth refrigerators that will allow you to customize the front panels with wood, just like true built-in refrigerators.

What refrigerator best meets your needs can only be decided by you. A new refrigerator will often last about 15 years. Take the time to check carefully into what type and size will be the best for you.

To fix up a frosted up vents, I had a control board replaced for $180. Then 6 months later, the bottom freezer frost up AGAIN. rather than dumping more money to fix it, I was about to buy a new fridge, but had a crazy idea: I disconnected the water to the freezer, bought plastic trays for ice cubes for $3 at walmart. Fridge has worked like a charm for 6 months. no signs of frost. Saved $1000's.

Fridge too cold!

don't forget that just turning down your fridge temp dose not mean your problem might be over yet. the freezer setting may also be too high & that will affect your fridge temp as well. i set both my control settings to around 50% of what is on the scale & that works perfect for my 7 yr old fridge. also, very important, is make sure the freezer portion is going through it's full defrost cycles, or it will freeze the upper portion inside the fridge. you should not have any frost build up in your fridge, nor should you have any in your freezer. that's why they call them FROST FREE. try the slow temp decrease over a period of a few days & hopefully that will work for you. good luck.

i would defrost it first, while you are defrosting it clean the coils if it has them some fridges its incorporated into the outer skin of the fridge ,you want oil the fan in the freezer and make sure the (if it has ) coil fan is working.. wipe the inside down dry ,a fan helps speed things along during the defrost, cycles defrost can get screwed up if you have left the door open on the fridge, unscrew light bulbs and put them to the side(to see if this is part of the problem, instal them the next day.check switches to make sure they turn off ,door closed) or it is in high use in high humidity area, hot pans,food.. vikings are a kool product , but only do what there made to do. if you try to use this for food service (commercial) it's going to be a pain, viking makes ones for that app... hope this was of help..jay the electric motor repair guy in longwood florida

Ice keeps building up in bottom of freezer and on vent inside fridge and now fridge won't stay cold.

Clean the coil inside the rear access panel behind the unit with a spray air duster and check for this problem.

I just opened up the back of my Frigidaire Side by Side counter depth to find the drain hose was bent and collapsed coming right out of the bottom of the freezer and the pan was dry as a bone. It doesn't look like my drain hose has ever drained a drop of water. The freezer bottom is full of ice And the rust and chipping paint under the bottom of the freezer door along with the mysterious puddles of water every morning means the drain system definetely never worked. Frigidaire should be responsible for this. This, along with the ice maker rebuild I had to do,... after ice was spilling all through the fridge. I actually had warrantty left on that one and called customer support in India to find out I could make the repair myself. Yep I had to do it. Frigidaire you failed.

It sounds like your evaporator fan motor, they last about 4-5 years. Try to see if the buzzing noise comes from the motor, usually in the freezer compartment behind a vented cover plate

The freezer is usually cooled by the compressor, the fridge is then cooled by an evaporator fan motor ($30). If this fan seizes or slows down then the fridge warms up (it sometimes starts squealing before this happens). It could be that your drain hose is clogged or frozen. Maybe the temperature adjuster go bumped.

If you think it is the evaporator fan motor:
Check to be sure you can get a replacement fan first, they last about 4 - 5 years. Can get from a parts supplier or electric motor company.
UNPLUG fridge. Located usually in top of freezer behind a vented cover plate. Remove cover, remove screws holding fan in, may have to cut wires. Replace with new motor, make sure the fan pushes air into the freezer area and doesn't spin backward drawing air from the freezer area.

Frig not stayng cool. Freezer not freezing

most fridges have a evaporator dish or container.
it must be emptied ...and cleaned and disinfected.

now-a -days they are usually mated with the compressor and cool this unit down. notice there is no coil along the back of the fridge...it is usiually behind the fridge at the bottom with a cardboard or plastic access cover...
this will make the unit cool better and return the cooling to normal....
\next
clean out your freezer...i bet it's full of 4 month old packs of something you'll never eat....this will let the freezer breathe and circulate air to the coil ...i bet it has 3 in of ice on it...yikes...your not alone...most people do this...\
get a freezer if your getting ready for the apocalypse and liberate some room.
good luck

Several things to check. Refrigerator needs to be put in manual defrost mode, then check defrost heater and defrost thermostat.
