Hitachi ultravision projection that is turning off

I have a hitachi ultravision projection tv. It is around 50 plus inches. It turns off about every 10 seconds. Then the picture and sound comes on for a second. The red power light stays on the whole time. The tv is about 6 to 7 years old. The tv has been fine, it just started doing this.

Your Guru didnt even know this set is a plasma, look for the main filters on the power supply, the big ones to see if the tops of them are crowned these new sets are very particular when it comes to filtering.

Likely the lamp in the set has failed here which does make sense if the picture was dim before---a lot of lamps just before failing all the way dim down.

Hitachi has had problems with their light engines. Very expensive. Contact Hitachi as they may give you consideration even if this is out of warranty.

check the solder around the area of the vertical IC. solder is either cracked or else cold. Cold solder appears as dull. Resolder anything that isnt shiny.

Probably a 'cold or detatched' solder joint on a component on that perticular circuit board you are 'wedging' with a plastic rod.
