Most likely you do not reset the drum. In this case, a new drum unit serves as the currents in the old, respectively, due to lack of charge is a problem with a gray background. Information on how to reset the imaging drum is open and is the official website of the manufacturer.

We can't find the manual for our Intellifax 4100 could you help me it is asking to clean the drum?

Most probably it is saying "Change the Drum." This is because the manufacturers have entered an arbitrary number of cycles as a reminder for you to buy a new drum. You can ignore this until the copy quality becomes too bad to read, then replace the drum.

I recommend to clean out an optics. Take apart a cartridge and well blow through, clean the rollers and contacts.

Print Quality Problem with Brother 2820 Fax

sounds like you are using generic drum and toner. try OEM (brother brand). you say copies are coming out completely gray. try printing an internal report from the control panel. if that is gray or received faxes are gray, then the problem is not in your scanner area, and i would wager you are using "generic" supplies.
