Question about Peavey CH1 Speaker

1 Answer

I have a pair of Peavey Hysis 2 speakers. At a gig on Saturday night one of the started crackling when loud vocals went through. I set them up in the garage next day and the cab that had been crackling was less clear and muddier sounding than the other one. There was definitely sound coming from the driver and the horn though.

You have likely almost but not totally fried a voice coil in your speaker. Most speakers get cooked from underpowering, not from being overdriven. What are the speakers rated for and what are you driving them with?

SOURCE: Peavey SP5

depends who assembled the speakers as to wheather or not there is any fuse proetection installed.
The drivers are probably gone from the highs because of overloading power surge on the same circuit as the cash register,
or
the crossover is failed.

Cheap fix is replace crossover
expensive fix replace cones of speaker

Best long term protection is to split up the power loading on the stage and surge/spike guard power boards for staging equipment & have resettable fuses installed at the crossobvers or the respective speaker connections.

SOURCE: horns don't work on sp2 speakers

I've got Peavey SP2's and SP4XT's and they have one common problem. The 22XT Driver needs replacing from time to time. It could be a power spike, overdriving from amp, over heating or dirt/water in horn. The driver is very easy to replace and costs about $40.00. Remove the horn, carefully lift the horn and disconnect black and red wires. Remember red is always +. Remove driver from horn with socket wrench or socket screwdriver, clean the circular gap on horn with masking tape to remove dirt, hand tighten driver screws, connect red and black wires, carefully set horn back in SP2 enclosure and slowly bring up the power. Also be sure to be very careful when setting the new driver/ coil in the horn. You don't want to damage the coils on the new driver at all!

Feedback 3-4 mtres from speakers

Feedback is caused by having the volume up too high or being too close to the speakers. Turn mic down a bit, feedback goes away.

Better speakers and mic will help.

Install a patch cord between Graphics in and Graphics out. There is a normally closed contact in the graphics in jack and it will cause loss of signal if it is dirty.

When you unload one amplifier you stand the chance of killing the amp's output transistor. If you must use only one speaker, you have to bridge the amps.

Yes, but you need to replace the entire speaker. The 1505 and 1508 use a different magnet though they look similar..

You will need at least a 24 channel mixer to give you spare channels. You also need an active crossover and a snake. The advice you need is too much to include here so I am including some links:http://mixonline.com/live/FixIts/, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_sound_mixing, http://mixinglivesound.com/blog/tag/outdoor-concerts/,http://mixinglivesound.com/blog/, and http://www.scribd.com/doc/11435651/Beginners-Guide-to-Mixing-Sound. You may need more monitors than you are planning on and you might consider in ear monitoring.

It sounds as though you are pointing the peavey at the band in a practice situation? If so make sure that each speaker is at about 60 degree angle to either side of the back of the mike (you facing the speakers), most mics reject feedback when the the user is directly in front of a monitor, but Beta 58s' tend to feedback more in that situation. Alternatively (if it is a practice room situation), why not place the speakers behind the band at 60 degrees each and turn to face the band.

Connecting cd player to mixer

This should work. I use a similar setup for break music at small gigs. I would check the cable and the output of the unit itself again. .
